Total Solar eclipse of 12th August 2026 as seen from near Osorno, 50 km west of Burgos, Spain. This was a low eclipse, so the corona looked yellowish during the totality of 1 minute 45 seconds.

Now I have a minor planet. It was discovered by Ovidiu Vaduvescu using images by Euronear Project taken at Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, Spain. This is a 2.2-km wide asteroid, revolving around the Sun every 5.62 years, at an average distance of 470 million km.🗿🙂 www.wgsbn-iau.org/files/Bullet...
Picture of a text from IAU WGSBN bulletin, which read as follows:

APOD 82 Retrograde Neptune & Saturn 2025-6 apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap260506.html vimeo.com/1177973763 I photographed Neptune and Saturn every 6 to 11 days between 9th May 2025 and 25th February 2026 while both planets traced their retrograde loops.
Neptune and Saturn trace their retrograde loops between 9th May 2025 and 25th February 2026. Saturn looks like a yellowish 1st magnitude star, tracing a loop of 7 degrees long, beginning in Pisces, then crossing to Aquarius at lower right just before October, and then making back to Pisces. Neptune's retrograde loop is more compact, visible as a series of 8th magnitude aqua-green dots spanning 3 degrees in Pisces.

The separation between Saturn and Neptune changes along the course of the year, as the planets trace different retrograde loops according to their own orbital velocities around the Sun, and also their distance. This has been the closest Saturn and Neptune have been in the sky since their last conjunction in 1989.

The appearance of Comet Hyakutake in 1996 had ended a long drought of great comets. But the weather in March 1996 was not very favourable. I was able to see Hyakutake at its closest for 10 minutes only. When I took this single picture 30 years ago today, clouds were coming back already.
Comet Hyakutake is visible with its long tail, not far from Alkaid and Mizar, two stars of Big Dipper in Ursa Major. Clouds shining in yellow-orange (because of the light pollution) are about to cover the comet in aqua-green colour.

APOD 79 2 Worlds, 2 Analemmas apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25062... The Martian analemma was presented by @elakdawalla.bsky.social‬ here: www.planetary.org/articles/a-m... ...Meanwhile, I had put together the Earth version while I was working in Baku, Azerbaijan: vimeo.com/195174652
The figure-8 shaped curve you get when you mark the position of the Sun in Earth's sky at the same time each day over one year is called an analemma, as seen in the left hand panel from Baku, Azerbaijan. Shape of the analemma depends on the eccentricity of a planet's orbit and the tilt of its rotation axis, so analemma curves can look different for different worlds. Mars' axial tilt is similar to Earth's, but its orbit around the Sun is more eccentric. As seen by Opportunity rover from Victoria crater in Mars, the analemma traced in the right hand panel is shaped more like a tear drop. Each world's solstices lie at the top and bottom of their respective analemmas.

APOD 78 Retrograde Mars 2024-5 apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25053... vimeo.com/1085645909 I photographed Mars every 5 to 9 days between 19th September 2024 and 18th May 2025, while the red planet traced its retrograde loop in Gemini and Cancer.
Mars seems to be going backwards (retrograde) from 8th December 2024 until 24th February 2025, as faster Earth catches up and passes slower Mars. The result is a clockwise loop traced against the constellations of Gemini and Cancer in the course of 8 months.

APOD 77 5 comets from SOHO apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap24101... A selection of 5 comets, as seen by SOHO Lasco C3 coronagraph. This has been the first time my name appears with an APOD, which I did not actually photograph.
Five bright comets are compared in these panels, recorded by a coronograph on board the long-lived, Sun-staring SOHO spacecraft. Arranged chronologically all are recognizable by their tails streaming away from the Sun at the center of each field of view, where a direct view of the overwhelmingly bright Sun is blocked by the coronagraph's occulting disk. Each comet was memorable for earthbound skygazers, starting at top left with Comet McNaught, the 21st century's brightest comet (so far). C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas, approaching its perihelion with the active Sun at bottom center, has most recently grabbed the attention of comet watchers around the globe. By the end of October 2024, the blank 6th panel may be filled with bright sungrazer comet C/2024 S1 Atlas. ... Or not, as C/2024 S1 Atlas may actually disintegrate.

APOD 75 Solstice Moon apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap24062... Full Moon of 21-22 June 2024 occurred within 28 hours of the solstice. I set up a camera at my rooftop in Bursa, Turkey to photograph the Moon every 10 minutes, which stayed less than 7 hours in the sky and rose only 22 degrees at local midnight.
The Moon is around a major lunar standstill, an extreme in the monthly north-south range of moonrise and moonset caused by the precession of the Moon's orbit over a ~19 year cycle. As a result, the full Moon of June 2024 solstice was at its southernmost moonrise and moonset along the horizon.

APOD 74 All Sky Moon Shadow and Eclipse Sun is up, but the sky is dark and the horizon is bright all around. Then you are in the Moon's shadow during a total eclipse of the Sun. Along with the solar corona surrounding the silhouette of the Moon planets and stars are visible during totality.
From the photographer: “I observed the total Solar eclipse of 8th April 2024 at a farm near Fox and Shirley, Arkansas, which lasted lasted 4 minutes 15 seconds.

One aspect about the total Solar eclipses I like very much is the dark blue sky surrounded by twilight colours all round the horizon and stars becoming visible. There is never enough time to look for the stars, so I try to do the next best thing, which is photographing all the sky and horizon. In this panorama, the southern horizon is at the bottom, east is to the left, north at top and west is to the right. The Sun was high due south during totality. Thanks to the Lunar shadow being larger than normal, the sky got dark enough to record four planets and many stars above at our location. Alternate image is the annotated version of this panorama, labeling the visible planets, some bright stars and also showing some constellation figure lines.

This 29th February marks my 32nd year as an active amateur astronomer and night sky photographer, according to my logs. Back then, I was a young guy looking at the southern sky in the evening and trying to photograph it. This picture from 29th February 2004 catches Jupiter at a spot similar to 1992.
In addition to the winter constellations which I was just beginning to recognise, Jupiter was an extra luminary at opposition a few degrees to the east of Regulus. Unfortunately, that very first roll of medium format film that I exposed with a Lübitel camera is lost. But this shot from 29th February 2004 could be a nice placeholder.
