Richland's Flock cameras came down in June. Axon cameras on existing light poles replaced them, under a contract that passed on the consent agenda in Oct 2025. RPD says it isn't using ALPR through the new system yet. Dori Luzzo Gilmour reports; audio by jmwood.bsky.social: patreon.com/tumbleweird

Left: a camera mounted on a curved streetlight against a cloudy sky, captioned Axon ALPR, George Washington Way, August 19, 2026, photo C. Gilmour. Right: a street map of Richland with green markers, captioned Axon Lightpost camera locations, from RPD’s August 25 presentation. Title: Flock is gone. Axon is here. By Dori Luzzo Gilmour.

on October 7, 2025, Richland City Council approved a contract with Axon including body cams, drones, storage and plate-reader cameras on existing light poles; it passed on the consent agenda.

nearly a year later Councilmember Kurt Maier asked how data would be protected better than with Flock. On September 21, RPD told Tumbleweird it is not currently using ALPR through the new system.

our 2025 reporting found Border Patrol had accessed Flock data here; a new state law caps plate-reader data at 21 days and bans use near schools, immigration centers, food banks and health care facilities.

Pasco's councilmember social media policy names MySpace, Flickr and Twitter. It says nothing about AI. Opinion: @bryanverhei.bsky.social speaks on the gap between discouraging something and banning it, and what an update should say. patreon.com/tumbleweird

On a charcoal background, the heading ‘Named in Pasco’s social media policy’ above four white tiles with the MySpace (a place for friends), Flickr, Twitter bird and RSS feed logos. Below, a dashed box reading Artificial intelligence, with a red stamp beside it: NOT MENTIONED. Title: Pasco’s social media policy is outdated, by Bryan Verhei.

Text slide: the policy names MySpace, Flickr, Twitter and RSS feeds and says nothing about AI; doing City business on private accounts is strongly discouraged, not disallowed.

Text slide listing Verhei’s fixes: define official business, limit use of the councilmember title on personal pages, enforceable rules enforced independently, no generative AI in messages to constituents, corrections up front.

Text slide: councilmembers keep their opinions and personal pages; City business gets a higher standard. What would you add? Standard Ask below.
