Priest in the North Westmorland Benefice, Cumbria, UK. Former lawyer. Humbly believe that there is a God, who loves everyone without exception, and it isn't my place to narrow that.

I have added my name: the UK should aim to join the European Union by 2036. Will you add yours? www.europeanmovement.co.uk/join_eu_by_2...

Add your name - Let's join the EU by 2036
Since 1949, we've held an unshakable belief in our country, that together, we are better with Europe. Join the European Movement today.

One thing I learned while being a corporate lawyer was not to make pronouncements about colleagues' legal specialties (crime, family, road traffic, property etc etc) about which I knew absolutely nothing, or only enough to be dangerous.

I can believe this. In the countryside/light traffic you can get around almost entirely on regenerative braking, with the brake pads only needed for coming to an actual stop, and for the unexpected appearances of other drivers, animals, pedestrians, rocks in road etc.

I imagine the point is that churches are subject to Faculty Jurisdiction, which replaces Listed Buildings Consent. But I think the point holds regardless: listed status represents a public judgment about the public interest in preserving something as valuable. That in turn informs Faculty decisions.

Very true. And in rural areas there are often just too many church buildings. Listing them makes any kind of rationalisation even harder.

That logo is crying out to be a slightly-animated ITV ident from the 70s or early 80s, and accompanied by a short fanfare.

Usual argument about artist and their art, of course, but it's hard to enjoy the nostalgia any more.

Mine too (early 20s). Very sad. Between reading the books and watching the films together, HP was a big part of their childhood, that we no longer want to revisit.

If only Brussels had spent more time brainwashing sense into us during all those decades of EU membership. (It's a bit like the lie that US Democrats rig elections, and yet the Republicans control the government...)

Quite a lot of it, yes. There are new signs, gates, fencing, fingerposts: a fair bit of it already needs renewing, or has moved in the very loose ground. Doesn't feel like a prestigious new project, sadly.

It's obviously a bit premature to pronounce it a forever war, but a quagmire seemed to be constructed and jumped into with the first days. And in moral terms, an abyss too.

In some places, it's not much of a construction. Near me, little more than a trodden way through dunes in places.

Speaking from among the British public, I think we might just put with, welcome and encourage this sort of thing rather longer than Mr Farage likes to pretend.

"One of the wonderful things about Iftars is they always tended to invite people who were not Muslims: they were cross-faith events. I personally felt the more they were held in public places - Villa Park, Edgbaston, the city centre, a way of sharing .. under British values" - Sir Andy Street

I read in this everything I read in my first term at university doing constitutional law, plus the very credible rider (which nobody pointed out at the time) that it only works in the public interest if there is decency and goodwill in government. So, what steps should we be taking now?

I shall no longer be drawing my bedcurtains, lest the sparks which my mobile phone is liable to emit at petrol stations should cause a conflagration. I shall pull my nightcap about my ears and ask the servants to bank the fire well.

I spent Boxing Day creating a spreadsheet for the last ten years' attendance at Christmas services, and then learned how to do graphs in Excel. But it's starting to look like amateur hour in comparison!

I spent 20 years being not very eminent but can't think of any occasion on which the eminence of opposing counsel (or solicitors) played a role in bringing the parties to a settlement. I remember quaking in my own boots once or twice, but it would have been quite improper to factor that in.

Leaving aside the attempt to make it a pejorative term, how can anyone entertain the suggestion of DEI hire in respect of someone who (whether you or I agree with him) has consistently been the democratic choice of a constituency (more than once, of a majority of those who cast a vote).

Sky News and the BBC repeatedly mention the "migrant crisis" in doing so they are normalising and legitimising far right talking points. There is no "migrant crisis", there is only migrant hysteria, which the British media is feeding into instead of countering.

One year in practice before everything I had studied was swept away by the CPR. Not soon enough to avoid having the White Book literally thrown at me by the QB Practice Master (on my first time solo in court) for not having brought the stamped originating summons for the order to be endorsed on it.

Why stop at the decalogue? Leviticus 19:34 should be next. And will older children have Matthew 5:21-22 on the wall too? 'Thou shalt not kill' is a bit unambitious without it.

Prejudice interacts with a pile of societal anxieties and hang-ups about toilets and changing rooms that often begin in school.

It's not sufficiently understood by many people how often women are challenged aggressively (or just subject to unpleasant remarks) in toilets, changing rooms. Happening before UKSC ruling and sadly no surprise if it got worse.

Pretty poor that Parliament couldn't have clarified its own definition in the Equality Act 2010, at some point in the intervening decade and a half. Many people will assume that some kind of value judgment is being made here, not merely statutory interpretation. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Re national church, there isn't a single hierarchy, just a collection of Dioceses. Very limited central power of command. Parishes are all independent charities, which their Dioceses cannot command, and have freestanding safeguarding obligations like other charities. Archaic. Hard to change.

Without wishing to minimise the appalling failings of the Church of England, things feel robust at the bottom of the structure in a way that they didn't in the past. No-one, and no rule, stops me from going directly to the LA, or the police, if I believe someone has been or is at risk of harm.

Thank you, Ben. Sad to see Historic Houses members being co-opted into a political argument that surely doesn't help them. I shall continue to enjoy NT and HH properties without considering them "competition" for one another!

Historic Houses is a non-profit association of heritage attractions that are still in family or other private ownership. It doesn't/can't impose 'wokeness', 'anti-wokeness' or anything else on its member properties. It would be nice to see HH correct the record.

Slightly unfair to illustrate this with a museum piece Land Rover narrower than many modern cars and designed to be light enough to transport by helicopter, on display at an enthusiasts' rally and probably exempt from VED. Substitute a Range Rover, Cayenne, X5 etc and I'm with you 100%.

I first saw this image at the age of 5 or 6 in a book on my parents' shelves, that perhaps ought not to have been left accessible to small children. I remember mostly horror, but also that the Spaniard must surely have done something horrific to deserve this.
