PHIZI is such a uniquely talented youtuber. It's really hard to put in word while I love his style of narrating so much, maybe the way he write his script or the way his talk? Check out this list, I already played probably half of these games and loved them. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bMP...

So much insight in just one hour of really engaging podcast. A few key points - Although we have not reach AGI, but the cost of AI is significantly cheaper - Agent is especially good in research and coding usecase, not so much in other castro.fm/episode/LLiJdw

After some digging, here are a couple thing I found out 1. Network latency between vercel and my db is not that bad 2. Bottle-neck is in my query Same query for handle: mcuban.bsky.social - Vercel -> Hetzner: 600 ms - Hetzner -> Hetzner: 540ms - Local - Local: 250ms

Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 25/12/2024
That's a really good point. I'll give it a try 🤔. Thanks Matt.

Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 25/12/2024
Haha. Thanks Seth! The fact is the Vercel one is still free for me. I still have to pay for the VPS anyway, because I host my db there. But it's definitely an option, if Vercel gonna charge me in the future.

Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 25/12/2024
Interesting. Thanks Leo. Probably the network latency between Vercel and Hetzner (db) is not that bad. My Hetzner instance in US, so probably network latency is not as big a deal as I thought.
020
Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 25/12/2024
Thanks Navin. Yeah that what I think should happen, since I check CPU and RAM utilization on my VPS, doesn't seem to be bottle neck and hetzner network is pretty fast. So i kinda expect to see improvement on the profile page.

Let's me know which one is faster and your idea why it is and isn't? whichpack.com vs beta.whichpack.com (see first post for more details) #nextjs #dev #buildinpublic

But from my own testing (just using normal browser to browse) The improvement if any is negligible. I thought by moving both web app and db into same machine, latency between the 2 component will improve the load time significantly. I see that very clear on my local machine.👇

Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 25/12/2024
Which is one faster for you? whichpack.com or beta.whichpack.com 1) whichpack.com is Hosted in Vercel 2) beta.whichpack.com is Hosted entirely on Hetzner on $5 vps Please help me test it. I thought beta will be faster since the web app is closer to the db (also host on the same instance)? But 👇

Migrated my db server from Neon (19$/month) to a VPS running on Hetzner ($5) month. Data migration is done and not that difficult. Server load is pretty good. Let's see how it goes when more users visit whichpack.com #buildinpublic #dev

Hehe. Not gonna use it for coding yet. It’s for dev ops stuff and some light text editing 😁.

Yeah. Probably a very niche and hard to sell market :D. Just checking 😁.

People who have nextjs app that want to escape Vercel for the fear of surprise large bill. But don’t have the time and/or expertise to self host their app. Go broader will be harder I think.

Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 14/12/2024
I think it's pretty neat. Could be something to support market research? Pay to get more insight for example? Or like GummySearch to explore niche?

Thenile.dev look pretty good. By the way, how much did you pay for your render db? I think starter (smallest one) seem limited right?

I think its mainly my past experience with running nextjs app on vercel while connecting to render postgresql server. I was not impressed by the latency between my nextjs app with render db. Maybe I need to reevaluate 😄.

I don't worry to much about the how. Because I love that part. I'm more worrying about how well it will perform compare to well-tuned auto-scale neon db. I guess the only way is to do it and find out anyway. :D
020
Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 11/12/2024
Where the fun!!! That’s why I’m asking here 😂
110
Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 11/12/2024
Yeah. For me, It's ok to run for 1-2 months, but to leave it out there for longer period, either the project has to make money. Or I need to host it somewhere cheaper to justify the cost. Not sure how to make money with whichpack yet 😅. My neon DB now has 3GB data, not sure how it run on VPS? 🤔
120
Tuan Cao @tuancao.me · 11/12/2024
Pretty good in term of performance. The only reason I chose it because it's less shitty Managed Postgresql service out there. - Supabase is good in term of price/performance, but I don't like the whole package. I just want plain Postgresql - Digital Ocean not good enough - Render not good enough
