TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 21/05/2026The big problem with loop detectors is they can’t easily be moved if you retime or change the speed of a road. They can still work, but not nearly as well as other options. 130
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026They are still looking at tunnels or elevated…all I’m saying is include batteries in the analysis…FLS standards likely needs to be reevaluated for batteries anyways, especially in tunnels/stations…would be good to know what other jurisdictions have done on that front… 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026The question is simply, would the benefits outweigh the costs for this project…if you aren’t doing this due diligence today you are missing out on potential unexpected savings…the cost to do the analysis is very small, but the benefit could be very big. 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026They are also used to lower costs, especially in areas with old bridges, tunnels, complex intersections, improving accessibility on narrow sidewalks, simplifying yards and mitigating other issues that end up becoming massive hidden costs. They can also be helpful during power outages, power down etc 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Should have also explored batteries… 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Yup, I’d say both are major problems… 010
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026@swanboatsteve.bsky.social we now have some hard evidence that the TTC doesn't care about signal timing...would be very interesting to get all this FOI'd to see if they actually made any requests... 110

TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026We would like: - type/location of sensors for transit priority (or other priority) - direction transit priority is available - when priorities were enabled - streetcar has cleared the intersection sensors - pedestrian island - separate signals for transit - left turn overrides - LPI Length 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Unsurprisingly the only people requesting this information are people who have the money to do so..."this river doesn't need a bridge, it's only used by a few people who swim across it"... 210
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 22/04/2026If we are going to improve traffic and transit in this city, you would think the first step would be to have all the traffic signal timings in an "accessible and machine-readable" format...but staff can't do it...so they are going to continue charging 130$ per intersection... #topoli 131

TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 08/04/2026Looks like we have got some action on this one! Less than 24 hours later and @diannesaxe.bsky.social had a motion to open signal timings...hopefully this one gets included at council... 120

TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026Cc: @civictechto.bsky.social maybe something we can push to get made public. Lots of good software to be made with this dataset. 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026It’s very hard to debug if you don’t have these (basically you need to open the cabinet and see if it’s being recognized)…camera could be obscured, gps misconfigured…no one ever notices…with them a driver could report an issue or even a rider… 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026Bergen does this with the circle/target indicator on the streetcar signal. Basically it says, the system sees you…if the light isn’t on, streetcar can move to be recognized, or there might be a problem with sensor. This is needed even if there is gps or cameras because there are many moving parts 210

TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026If we want to get traffic moving, let’s not hide the special sauce behind a massive paywall…to get all 3000 timings would cost over 350k$… Cc: @mayoroliviachow.ca and @diannesaxe.bsky.social would be a good first step for our traffic czar… 120
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026Hey #topoli - why do we charge 116$ to find out the timings for a streetlight? This should be available for free from @torontoopendata.cityof.toronto.ca 142
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/20265) upgrades to sensors and tracking of vehicles for improved transit priority 6) transit priority positive feedback (train recognized, priority active signals visible to public) 7) improved reporting and stats 110
TTC Switches and Signals @ttcswitches.bsky.social · 07/04/2026We’re going to be advocating for 1) info about Go Slow zones on the subway and streetcar systems 2) a project to eliminate Go Slows at intersections and switches 3) upgrades to dual blade switches 4) upgrades of control software to include positive feedback of switch position 151
