huh... does the SSB BFO on my grundig G5 have a warmup time? it seems to be stabilizing after a few minutes, but it was shifting pretty quickly at first. could also be something going wrong with my network pulseaudio pipe (wsjt-x isn't running on a box near the actual radio)

I don't think I've seen this in the FT8 waterfall before. Tuned to 21074kHz. Like UUUUDDDUDDUUDUDD being entered as a super slow level select code. is this a FM CW mode designed to cut through the noise floor like WSPR does? some sort of niche ionosonde-like device?

I still need a better way to get wires into the chamber but sticking them at the edge of a split silicone sheet between other sheets and seals does okay. I need a better HV supply, too; these cheap charge pumps are very flaky and can overheat quickly. But, wow, ~6" spark gap jumped, quite brightly!

For comparison, this is w/o the bandstop. 3.5MHz, 6.5MHz, & 13.5MHz out of the ADE-6 are nearly as strong as the 10MHz; a weak 16.5MHz is also visible (all on the smaller TinySA). This would be more interesting if I filtered the output of the first mixer! I have variable capacitors somewhere...

Bench setup identical to other pictures except the RF test board with the bandstop filter approved. The smaller TinySA shows stronger 3.5MHz, 6.5MHz, and 13.5MHz versus the previous pictures.

The bandstop decreases the input 6.5MHz but also the output 3.5MHz from the ADE-6, suggesting that some of the 3.5MHz output is downconverted via the 10MHz IF (probably should look at potential phase shift in some of this stuff! I haven't yet)

Lab bench setup similar to the one in the quoted thread. This time, two TinySAs are visible, as well as two more small boards, plus a large board, with SMA cabling (ADE-6 and a powered board with one input and one output; large RF test board has a bandstop connected between the mixers). Oscilloscope shows 10MHz in FFT mode. Larger TinySA shows strong 3.5MHz and 10MHz with slightly weaker 13.5MHz, 6.5MHz, and 16.5MHz. Smaller TinySA, connected to the ADE-6 RF_LO output, shows strong 10MHz and weak 3.5MHz, 6.5MHz, 13.5MHz, and 16.5MHz

Much too faint for my cheap prism spectroscope to really view. I should get some diffraction gratings, but I would like to find a cheap set with a variety of spacings; I haven't found that at an affordable price yet... I also need an adjustable-spacing electrode holder, not hanging copper wire lol

Repeated this with 2x 18650 (reading about 3.8v) in series, which didn't quite ionize the gap at 1atm (HV output scales from 3kV to 11kV based on input voltage). Gas discharge started while evacuating the chamber but was less intense. (Spark gap might be slightly larger too). Repressurizing video:

I need a better spectro setup for these activities. But I still don't have a good vacuum chamber setup; this is a cheap at-home soft-vacuum materials processing system (for epoxy curing, I think?) not designed to run wires or other things into, so I had to plop in a 9V battery w/ a mini HV generator

It's neat to see the sweep peak with ±10MHz peaks march across the specA screen to the right, except for 1/6 of the time when it's less than the other input and one of the peaks is marching to the left before it bounces off the axis at the origin as the sweep frequency crosses 10MHz!

Now, CH2 @10MHz sine 1Vpp; CH1 sine sweep 0-60MHz over 10s 1Vpp. Realized scope was on max-hold; set FFT to normal mode, changed to 10μs tick for faster refresh. Max 1.6mV RMS across 50ohm dummy load (-43dBm?) seemed plenty safe for TinySA, which can handle +10dBm, so set it to 0-80MHz.

Signal generator and DC power supply (4.55V drawing 70mA, into DD1718PA dual DC buck-boost) on bottom of rack. Siglent sds 1202x-e oscope on top connected to sweep for fft with big peak visible above noise floor at 500MSa/s, with top half of screen showing both signals in time domain (no trigger so blurry); BNC tees allow input to X2 (sweep) and Y1 (steady) on AD834. Fluke 17B+ meter on AC mV max/min teed across load showing 0.9mV. TinySA Ultra+ also connected across load with another tee with several peaks visible.

Finally got to test the AD834 module (Y=0.5MHz@±0.5V, X=2.2MHz@±0.5V) with a DD1718PA generating about ±4.5V dual supply (Vin apparently needs to be <~8V for -V0 to be <0V, and Vin needs to be <~4.5V to avoid faint audible screeching when loaded!) Yay, multiplying sine waves worked!

Found out the hard way that none of the Rockville Rockmix 10FX stereo options can be separated as monitor-only vs main mix, so solved my multitracking woes by adding an extra LZSIG LMIX1 I had picked up to give me a monitor mix that includes the Behringer USB 2 channel interface headphone output lol

I doubted my phone camera is sensitive enough but you can kinda see it in max sensitivity if I do a 30 second exposure. Look towards bottom right center for a few near each other, which helps make them easier to spot
