Biesma has asked himself why he was vulnerable to what came next.
...
He had previously written books with a female protagonist. He put one into ChatGPT and instructed the AI to express itself like the character.
...
Eva never got tired or bored, or disagreed. “It was 24 hours available,” says Biesma. “My wife would go to bed, I’d lie on the couch in the living room with my iPhone on my chest, talking.”

my favorite thing about the Economic Times is how they write about fraud destroying economies the way the mainstream media talks about "officer-involved shootings" destroying local communities
Rising debt, negative cash flow, and soaring capex are now colliding, and that collision drove a sharp selloff. Many investors expected Al revenue to start showing up faster, not later. This mismatch has triggered new debate about whether the Al boom is becoming Ba expensive bubble for early movers like Oracle. One of the biggest red flags came from future cloud contract bookings. Oracle reported $523 billion in future agreements, missing expectations of $526 billion. The shortfall may appear small, but for a company betting its future on cloud and Al scale, even a minor miss can rattle confidence. Bookings are watched closely as a signal of long-term demand. A slowdown, even a slight one, raises uncomfortable questions)

At the same time, puppygirl also know that ‘becoming puppy’ is both a liveable position, and one that can never be fully realised. There is no way to fully step out of the world of being human, as long as one is required to be one for survival and basic recognition. For all the jokes about it, there is no mythical dog pound on the other side of normativity, where all puppygirls can live in joyous (in)humanFootnote6 harmony. This is what all the jokes about dumb mutts with master degrees suggest: many of us have to play at humanity, even as that humanity neither suits us, nor nourishes us. In this sense, puppygirl culture does not really promise a revolutionary solution to the challenges of trans life. It does not propose a way out of our present binds, though it does possibly make them more liveable in the present. To become is not to
progress or regress along a series. Above all, becoming does not occur in the
imagination, even when the imagination reaches the highest cosmic or
dynamic level, as in Jung or Bachelard. Becomings-animal are neither
dreams nor phantasies. They are perfectly real. But which reality is at issue
here? For if becoming animal does not consist in playing animal or imitat-
ing an animal, it is clear that the human being does not "really" become an
animal any more than the animal "really" becomes something else. Becom-
ing produces nothing other than itself. We fall into a false alternative if we
say that you either imitate or you are. What is real is the becoming itself, the
block of becoming, not the supposedly fixed terms through which that
which becomes passes. Becoming can and should be qualified as be-
coming-animal even in the absence of a term that would be the animal
become. The becoming-animal of the human being is real, even if the ani-
mal the human being becomes is not; and the becoming-other of the animal
is real, even if that something other it becomes is not. This is the point to
clarify: that a becoming lacks a subject distinct from itself; but also that it
has no term, since its term in turn exists only as taken up in another becom-
ing of which it is the subject, and which coexists, forms a block, with the
first

The world won't end just because the CDC has capitulated to cranks. While scary, it it also motivates regional actors to start taking matters into their own hands, and look towards a future where these eroded institutions could become irrelevant. www.stamfordadvocate.com/connecticut/...

one way "knowledge work" is gatekept to a degree is accountability- novel problem solving has novel consequences for failure, and requires an amount of trust in the problem-solver, usually with some skin in the game by way of legal and reputational penalties for fraud/negligence.
This motivation is that AI is seen as a threat. The particular
form of threat that AI poses is to an identity possessed by the
shamer, that they covet, that they value materially and spiritually,
and that maintains its value through exclusivity. This is the class
identity of the professional; most commonly that of the knowledge
worker. The work degradation and job loss arguments come close
to revealing this motivation, but there is a subtle distinction: those
arguments emerge primarily from the experience of individuals;
from their perspective, jobs are lost to bogeymen of automation
and corporate rapacity, or an anonymous, undifferentiated mass of
unskilled opportunists. In contrast, the latent motivation for sham-
ing precipitated by the threat to identity emerges from processes
by which a group forms an interior solidarity – a class solidarity
– to defend itself and consolidate its control over resources from
a well-defined outgroup. In particular, AI enables an outgroup of
less-enculturated workers (the shamed), those without access to
privileged education and professions, albeit those with the affinity
for technology and a certain entrepreneurial grit, to competently
perform knowledge work that was heretofore the preserve of a
privileged elite (the shamers).

somebody was trying to stan this paper in the quotes and I love how its impossible to read this, even charitably, as having a point, because it basically says "y'all probably rightfully mad, but I'm gonna assume that you're not and go from there"
It is not the purpose of cataloguing these arguments to refute them or deny their validity. They may well be truthful and justified reasons for imparting a negative judgement on an artefact or person by association with AI. However, I will suggest that while possibly
true, these arguments cloak a deeper underlying motivation for shaming, of which may the shamer may not even be conscious.

there isn't data on which specific arguments are most compelling, but we do know anti-marketing has swayed public opinion on "AI" could be purely environmental or job concern arguments, but it seems harmless to shotgun em at normies. probably isn't swaying techbros but they're a minority
In the United States, an October 2023 survey found that 49% of respondents thought the risks of AI outweigh benefits, while 34% took the opposite view. An August 2023 survey revealed a similar pattern: 52% of U.S. adults felt more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI, while only 10% expressed more excitement than concern. This represents a significant shift from December 2022, when just 38% reported more concern than excitement, and suggests growing wariness as AI systems become more capable, AI issues gain greater public attention, and public exposure to and experiences with AI increase. Similar patterns hold in the U.K. An October 2023 survey found 48% of U.K. respondents believe the risks outweigh benefits versus 38% who saw greater benefits than risks. Another August 2023 survey found that 25% of adults thought AI’s impacts would be net negative, compared to just 14% who anticipated more positive outcomes. This trend toward increasing pessimism is also reflected in the rise of U.K. respondents who believe the risks of AI outweigh the benefits—with this share increasing by 5 percentage points between July 2022 and August 2023, according to the same survey.

the company just claims it's not interest, with a statutory carveout for the lie
But the proposal added significant potential costs. To allow lenders to circumvent the state’s interest rate cap, the legislature simply called the interest something else: a “customary fee.” The law would permit flex lenders to charge 24% interest plus a daily fee until the loan is paid off. The fee is calculated by multiplying the loan amount by 0.7%. Over 365 days the fee adds 255.5% to the cost of the loan. Advance’s own documentation tells borrowers that although the state and Advance call it a fee, the federal government sees it for what it is, an interest rate.
