Joe Bonamassa
Modern Blues-Rock Titan, Master Collector & Virtuosic Guitar Icon
Biography & Career Overview
Born May 8, 1977, in New Hartford, New York, Joe Bonamassa is one of the most prolific, commercially successful, and technically accomplished blues-rock guitarists of the modern era. Recognized as a child prodigy, he began playing guitar at age four and famously opened approximately twenty concert dates for the legendary B.B. King by the age of twelve. In his teens, he formed the southern rock/blues outfit Bloodline alongside the sons of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger, and Berry Oakley.
Launching his solo career in 2000 with A New Day Yesterday, Bonamassa established an independent, direct-to-fan business model alongside longtime manager Roy Weisman via J&R Adventures. Collaborating closely with veteran producer Kevin Shirley since 2006, Bonamassa has amassed an unprecedented 27+ number-one albums on the Billboard Blues Chart. Beyond his solo endeavors, he is a tireless collaborator, co-founding supergroups such as Black Country Communion and Rock Candy Funk Party, tracking duo records with Beth Hart, and heading the non-profit Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation.
Musical Instrumentation & Technical Signature
British Blues-Rock & Pentatonic Velocity
Fuses American Delta/Chicago blues sensibilities with the aggressive attack, singing sustain, and high-gain British blues-rock lineage of Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, and Gary Moore. Renowned for blistering pentatonic and blues-scale runs articulated with machine-gun alternate picking.
Expressive Vibrato, Bending & Dynamics
Possesses an exceptionally controlled, vocal-like finger vibrato and pinpoint microtonal pitch bends. He is a master of volume and tone pot manipulation directly from the instrument to transition from whisper-clean chime to searing lead overdrive.
Acoustic Virtuosity & Fingerstyle
Extensive acoustic command featuring flatpicking, rapid hybrid picking, and classical/flamenco-influenced runs, showcased in signature pieces like "Woke Up Dreaming."
Vintage Gear Connoisseur ("Nerdville")
Curator of one of the world's most renowned collections of vintage instruments and amplifiers, famously touring with original late-1950s Gibson Les Paul "Bursts" (including "Principal Guest" and "Skinnerburst"), 1950s Fender Stratocasters and Teles, and running complex multi-amp rigs combining vintage high-powered Fender Tweed Twins, Dumble Overdrive Specials, and Marshall Silver Jubilees.
