I had these two jars on my kitchen table for a long time (without the labels on the lids) and had to double check them each time I used them. It was just a matter of time until I was in a hurry and didn't check. That time was today. Never again.

My sister is visiting with her dogs, and every time the dogs get fed, it is so confusing for Trivia. She can SMELL the food. Delicious food is being prepared yet it's not being given to her?? And when she follows the food smell she is denied entry? What madness is this?

Cool bug alert! Female dobsonfly. They don't live long as adults and are usually active at night, so I guess she may be on her way out. The Internet says they don't eat as adults so I guess they don't hunt but she seems to have great eyesight. She was moving her head and watching me.

Sometimes I decide to learn to do something simply because it seems like the sort of thing I should have already done by now. Like the time I took up lockpicking. Anyway, today's activity was: cutting a fresh coconut & polishing it to plant my staghorn fern in.

goddammit this squirrel started hanging out on my porch. I chased her and poked her with a stick when she was in my potted plants but then I noticed her nipples. so now once again I am supplying a mama squirrel with peanuts. I will keep chasing her w/ a stick if she's digging in my plants tho.

Update: had to put the thunder coat on her last night (bc thunder) and usually she will immediately be up and begging to have the coat taken off in the morning. But since I covered her with blanky she hasn't moved.

My sister's dog chewed up her favorite sweater so I told her I'd try mending it. I wasn't expecting much, especially since I was just freehanding it trying to knit shapes to match the holes, but it turned out so much cooler than expected!

Visited by a pair of black-bellied whistling ducks! We're on the northernmost tip of their usual range, depending on the map, but I've never seen them here before. It's super weird seeing ducks in trees. It just seems wrong. Look at its big old flipper feet. Those are not tree bird feet.

Whether it's on the ground or flying around, If it's a bat, don't touch that! It is tempting to pick up a bat because they look so unusual. Don't do it! Leave bats alone. Bats are helpful in nature. However, they also can spread rabies. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus. You can get rabies if an animal that has rabies bites you. Bat teeth are so small you might not even know you were bitten! You can also get rabies if the saliva from an animal with rabies gets in your eyes, nose, or mouth. This can happen if you get the saliva on your fingers and then touch your face. Another way you can get rabies is by touching an animal with rabies and getting its saliva in open cuts on your skin. Tell a building manager, risk manager, or security officer right away if you have touched a bat o a bat has touched you. There is medicine that can keep you from getting rabies. For the medicine to work well, it must be given soon after contact with a bat. Remember, if you find any bat, even if it is dead, do not touch it. Tell one of the individuals mentioned above right away about the bat and where you found it.

Back in high school I made a Cerberus costume by decapitating two stuffed animals and sewing them onto a shirt. We're trying to find a place to donate it, but I couldn't resist getting a picture with Poppy.

This is the first hyacinth to bloom, and it smells so good. I didn't actually notice the little bugs until I was looking at this picture, but apparently they're invasive cucumber beetles. :-(

I also repaired the drip irrigation system for the raised bed. SOMEONE chewed through almost half of the little hoses. Probably squirrel but also possibly bunny, since I know they've had nests in there. The system seems to be working now & I planted a bunch of flowers.

For reference, this is the ridiculously overkill rainwater collection system my dad designed & built years ago. There's also a network of underground piping leading to six hose bib risers throughout the yard.

We have a lot of attractive weeds with/instead of grass, like straggler daisy. I've started seeing a TON of a new weed all over the yard that I hadn't seen before, but apparently it's called Texas Baby Blue Eyes. I mostly only pull weeds if they have burrs or smell bad, this one is welcome.

Kinda want to get more. They seem pretty adaptable? The labels said full shade to full sun. Hope they do well here. They're in the Saxifragaceae family, same as my Strawberry Begonia (neither a strawberry nor begonia), which has been one of my favorite houseplants this past year.

The past couple of years, I would see these colorful plants at the garden store and go over thinking they were ornamental sweet potato and then being disappointed when they weren't. Today I decided to get them anyway because I've been attracted to them so long. Heuchera / coral bells

This young friend apparently didn't get the memo that it's summer already, and was still sleeping in my fern inside. Startled me when I went to water it (though she looks like she could use a drink too).

It's supposed to get down well below freezing this weekend, so most of the plants had to come inside.

Not sure if my cat really prefers dogs to other cats or if she just enjoys having a temporary visitor but wouldn't want a full-time sibling. She does seem happy when her dog friends visit.

Finished my lazy greenhouse. It was originally a catio with a cat flap in the window, but my current cat hasn't been interested in going out. We get a lot more 100 F days than freezing days, so it's not too heavy duty, but should provide some insulation.
