If you have personal experience that schoolwork is harder for kids now than it used to be, in terms of researching & writing papers, I'd love to hear it. My anecdotal evidence says research writing is not being taught, assigned, or required at anywhere near the level it was two generations ago.

Correction tape LIFTED OFF a tiny bit of plastic typewriter ribbon off the paper. You found the right term though: Correction TABS! With a fabric ribbon, the typewriter key pressed ink from the ribbon into the paper. It couldn't lift off but it could be covered with the white chalky substance.

Old fashioned correction tabs--correct typing errors on carbon copies without erasing, just re-type. Typing mistakes disappear like magic in seconds.

Some bright kids overwhelm their teachers with lots of beautiful words. If you got through school partly with well-written BS, it's easier to write 5 pages than one. So one-page papers were VERY hard for some folks. It's been (many) decades but I *still* remember the topic of that first paper: /1

My mom saved a "book" I wrote in second grade about the solar system. Six sheets of 8 x 10 paper folded in half and stapled, with only a few words on each page. I know it is somewhere in all of these old boxes...

Yes, they have a lot of things way harder than we did. Schoolwork isn't one of them. Dangerous conditions in school (shootings/bombings), they do have that much harder than we did, though. School was my safe space. I can't even imagine not feeling safe in school.

Apparently nowadays a 10 page paper is considered long. A 20-25 page final paper was the standard way back when I was in college. A ten page final paper was a gift!

I remember a class that was VERY strict about page limits, with a lot of 1-page paper assignments on topics that were HARD to condense to one page. If you turned in a page and few extra lines on a second page, all you got back was the first page with this note at the bottom: "seems to end abruptly"

When I went to college it was a mini-crisis for my single mom that every student was required to bring a typewriter. I didn't have one & they weren't cheap. A work-friend of my mother's gave me an old typewriter of his. I wish I had kept it--by now I could sell it to Tom Hanks as an antique.

OMG i remember well how exciting it was when the first correcting typewriters became available. Just hit the special backspace key and the wrong letter was literally lifted off the page! I used one in an office setting years before I could afford one of my own.

Of course Solberg is right & Norway deserves praise for its public policy. It's not a coincidence that countries having trouble with this are the countries that are more diverse. Even magafolk favor government help for the needy when they live in areas where the "undeserving" all look like them.
