Makes me realize Hastert’s molestations would have gone unnoticed in our current era of “crime, what crime?” for Federal officials. A knock-on effect of the failure of our current GOP-led government across all branches, to uphold laws and norms.

Pretty sure IDNA designers made a very similar mockup back in pre-COVID times.

This is great if everyone practices perfect account hygiene. That’s not happening, now or ever, unfortunately. Nor, I would argue - should it be. Not everyone wants to be an expert in this space, many would be quite happy to have a trusted service help them protect their accounts.

Ahh, yes, I guess I do shorthand sync as equivalent to backup, as even if I lose a phone, I use sync to restore to the new device. But in a strict usage of the terms, I see your point that they are not the same. That said, I’m not sure how many people actually care about the difference? 🤷‍♀️

A synced passkey has the benefit of being backed up to devices in your trusted circle of devices. That limited number of devices is also a security measure. Why force a user through a less secure/more onerous account recovery flow account by account instead?

Importing and exporting passkeys and passwords is now available on Android. This resolves the security risks of legacy plaintext CSV exports and the inability to migrate passkeys across providers through secure, OS-level peer-to-peer data transfer.

Things were pretty quiet the rest of the afternoon. Arlington Fire did a great
job getting the flames out and the smoke cleared. Soldiers from Fort Myer were brought over, clothed in protective coverings, and with guides went back into the building to look for casualties, but only bodies were found and recovered. Everyone who survived the crash got out early. The dead very likely never knew what had happened.
Medical people from Walter Reed came to staff the medical tents on the highway about 11:00 pm. I was hanging out with the Chaplain who lived about 35 miles west of DC, and he started wondering about getting home. I persuaded him to spend the night with us, and about midnight Joyce was able to bring the car within about a half mile from the site, and she took us back home. He and I spent two hours decompressing with a big bottle of Jack Daniels, and watching news re-plays of the day (we hadn't seen any TV), then going to bed.
The next day we returned to the site about 9:00 am. The Pentagon Clinic had assumed all medical responsibilities, so the Chaplain and I hung out at the Survivor and Family Center set up in Crystal City for people worried about casualties, unidentified persons, etc. Many families of victims came into the center from around the US. President Bush came to the Pentagon site that evening and the flag was unfurled on the impact site.
Joyce has her own story to tell about the day. She was at work as an Occupational Health Nurse in the offices of the Federal Bureau of Prisons downtown.
Word of the attack spread through downtown like wildfire, and announcements were made that the Metro system was not running. Everyone was to evacuate, so all the huge federal buildings poured their workers out on the streets. It was chaos. Joyce was going to walk back to Falls Church 6-7 miles, but was able to snag a ride (albeit slow) in a car to within walking distance. She got home in mid-late afternoon.
Elizabeth was in a Master's program at Vanderbilt University…

and out through it to the lawn on the west side where the helipad was located. I saw a fierce fire that I thought was coming from the helipad hanger, but it was actually coming from the building. Shortly, a huge fire broke out, with huge clouds of black and white smoke. People were coming out of exits to the lawn, sitting and lying down, many with smudges and shocked faces, many crying.
I didn't have anything to work with. I put my briefcase down where I thought I might find it later, and tried to console as many people as I could. The Pentagon is located directly beside a busy highway, and the lanes are adjacent to the lawn. I saw and heard several uninjured personnel go out on the highway, stop the traffic, grab some casualties who looked pretty bad, and put them in the back seat of several stopped cars, and yelled at the driver, "Take this person to the hospital, and make it fast." Amazingly they all did. I never heard of a problem raised, but it took the authorities five days to find out where everyone was taken.
Arlington County is the responsible agency for police, fire, and EMS services to the Pentagon. Ambulances and fire trucks arrived quite quickly, and they set up their EMS programs and procedures. Navy personnel from the adjacent Navy Annex up the hill responded to the site and established a triage point in a highway underpass. The crowd that got outside milled around on the lawn. A few IVs were started, but nearly all the injured casualties were taken to hospitals by the cars and the now arriving ambulances, and virtually no casualty remained behind needing to be treated on site.
My nurse partner in M&RA, LTC Patty Horoho, who had a Master's degree in
mass trauma joined the Arlington County EMS director and in essence ran the military activities the remainder of the day. I stumbled across a young Lieutenant who had a cell phone that actually had an open line to the command suite at Walter Reed, and when I asked for it, he was grateful that I took it off…

Joyce and I took a few days leave to come to Lincoln and visit Mom. We flew home on Monday evening, September 10, 2001, and both of us went to work the next morning. I was at work finalizing a briefing for TSG when my boss' secretary came in and asked "Doc, do you know how to turn the TV on in our office? I'm alone here today, and I think something is going on that we need to check on."
I said "sure," and plugged the secret code into my boss' TV set, and lo and behold, the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City had just been hit by an airplane. Holy Moley! But I had to brief TSG that afternoon, and I needed a haircut, so I headed down to the barber shop.
I encountered our office Chaplain, LTC Lindsey Arnold, enroute, and said, "If you haven't heard, FYI something is going on in New York, and the WTC has just been hit by an airplane." He told me, "OK, I'm conducting an Army Chaplain's conference right now, but I'll stay alert." I asked, "How big is the conference?" "More than 100," he said. I went on to the barber shop and got my hair cut.
Back in my office, the secretary came in again and said the second tower had
just been hit. It was awful. But was really focused on my briefing, so she walked back to the office. About 15 minutes later I heard this really loud "Boom," all the lights went out, the building shook, and the ceiling fell in on me. "Damn, I can't finish my briefing." I fumbled around, found my brief case which had my black beret in it, and stumbled through the ceiling debris out to the hall. It was pitch black. From memory 1 knew where the nearest exist was, and slowly fumbled my way toward it

My dad survived the Pentagon attack on 9/11. Before he died in Dec 2020, he wrote his military career biography - seriously, it’s a whole edited, bound production, this man loved his career in military public health. The following is his brief remembrance of the day.

We wake with
no words, just woe
& wound. Our own country shoot ing us in the back is not just brutal ity; it's jarring betrayal; not enforcement, but execution. A message: Love your people er you will die. Yet our greatest threat isn't the outsiders among us, but those among us who never look within. Fear not the those without papers, but those without conscience. Know that to care intensively, united, is to carry both pain-dark horror for today & a profound, daring hope for tomorrow. We can feel we have nothing to give, & still
belove this world wait ing, trembling to change. If we cannot find words, may we find the will; if we ever lose hope, may we never lose our humanity. The only undying thing is mercy, the courage to open
ourselves like doors, hug our neighbor, & save one more bright, impossible life.

Mercy
after Nikki Giovanni
She asks me to kill the spider.
Instead, I get the most peaceful weapons I can find.
I take a cup and a napkin.
I catch the spider, put it outside and allow it to walk away.
If I am ever caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, just being alive and not bothering anyone,
I hope I am greeted with the same kind of mercy.

The Watch
At night, my husband takes it off
puts it on the dresser beside his wallet and keys
laying down, for a moment, the accoutrements of manhood.
Sometimes, when he’s not looking, I pick it up
savor the weight, the dark face, ticked with silver
the brown, ostrich leather band with its little goosebumps
raised as the flesh is raised in pleasure.
He had wanted a watch and was pleased when I gave it to him.
And since we’ve been together ten years
it seemed like the occasion for the gift of a watch
a recognition of the intricate achievements
of marriage, its many negotiations and nameless triumphs.
But tonight, when I saw it lying there among
his crumpled receipts and scattered pennies
I thought of my brother’s wife coming home
from the coroner carrying his rings, his watch
in a clear, ziplock bag, and how we sat at the table
and emptied them into our palms
their slight pressure all that remained of him.
How odd the way a watch keeps going
even after the heart has stopped. My grandfather
was a watchmaker and spent his life in Holland
leaning over a clean, well-lit table, a surgeon of time
attending to the inner workings: spring,
escapement, balance wheel. I can’t take it back,
the way the man I love is already disappearing
into this mechanism of metal and hide,
this accountant of hours
that holds, with such precise indifference,
all the minutes of his life.
