In this post, I want to discuss the common weeb paradigm of “bad Western women vs good Japanese women”. In this weeb paradigm, Western women are seen as having crazy woke beliefs, whereas Japanese women are seen as the opposite. In other words, this weeb paradigm portrays Japan as a place where men can run away from the craziness of woke Western feminism.

The biggest flaw in this paradigm is that weebs don’t realize that young Japanese women in 2026 are woke feminists by default, even more so than Western women. Let me explain.

Woke feminist education enforced by the government

If you think Japanese education teaches women to be “Good Wife, Wise Mother” 良妻賢母, your understanding of Japanese education is stuck in a much older era. For recent generations, the government’s guideline for education has a very clear message: Japan is suffering from a severe labor shortage due to population decline, and women need to get the f out of the house and work until they drop. In the era of labor shortage, women’s participation in the workforce is no longer a purely moral issue of the woke mind; it’s economically necessary. To encourage women’s participation in the workforce, the government’s guideline for education strongly promotes gender equality.

In recent decades, the most decisive dividing point between tradition and progressive gender education happened in 1989. In 1989, the government officially abolished traditional gender role education. Japanese K12 schools have a class called “family studies” 家庭科. Prior to 1989, family studies separated boys and girls based on traditional gender roles, and girls were taught feminine domestic skills. After 1989, schools were required to treat boys and girls the same in family studies. This change signals a clear message from the government: Japanese schools must NOT mold boys and girls into traditional gender roles. After 1989, Japanese schools began a series of reforms to erase traditional gender roles, such as allowing girls to not wear skirts for school uniforms and abolishing gender-separated ways of addressing people (like calling boys “kun” and calling girls “chan”). These reforms continue today. And unlike in the West, there is no such thing as parents sending their kids to religious schools that teach traditional gender roles and creationism to avoid woke education.

In general, Japanese women who are in their 20s and 30s today grew up in an era when schools continuously strive toward more gender equality. Gender equality is their default ideology. The Japanese women with traditional gender values that weebs worship exist, but they are mostly aunties and grannies who went to school before 1989. (But who says weebs can’t be into older ladies?)

No anti-feminism backlash in Japan

In Japan, there is no significant movement against feminism. There is no Japanese equivalent of the incel movement, trad wife movement, or Andrew Tate phenomenon. Of course sexism still exists in Japan, but the Western super toxic anti-feminism movements don’t have equivalents in Japan. Amazingly, even the Japanese conservatives and far right don’t think of feminism as a major issue today. Neither Japanese conservatives nor far right folks have chosen gender issues as their core ideological battleground. Today’s Japanese conservatives and far right folks might occasionally say things that challenge liberal feminist beliefs, but overall they have all strategically decided that fighting against gender equality will NOT be a core issue for them.

In today’s Japan, the only major conservative agenda related to gender equality is that conservatives require married couples to have the same surname. This requirement is seen as unfair to women since it’s usually the wife who takes her husband’s surname. However, Japanese conservatives today are very open to the husband taking the wife’s surname. As long as the married couple has the same surname, conservatives are happy even if it’s the husband who takes the wife’s surname. In fact, Japan’s conservative superstar Takaichi herself has her husband taking her surname, and conservatives have 0 problem with this even though it’s against traditional gender roles. The reality is that today’s Japanese conservatives don’t care about enforcing traditional gender roles, and there is no major segment of the Japanese society that unites around anti-feminism ideologies. The current state of Japanese society is that gender equality has become the default ideology, and there is no major backlash against it. In the West, gender equality is the default ideology only for liberals. In Japan, gender equality is the default ideology for all without ideological separation between liberal and conservatives. On average, Japanese women are probably more woke than Western women since no segment of the Japanese population dilutes or lowers the wokeness by fighting against it.
