Electric cars will make cities quieter but not as much as you might think
Lower speed-limit roads and congested areas will see much quieter streets, others not so much

Car noise is mostly tire noise. "No significant differences in A-weighted noise levels between different kinds of propulsion systems were found. However, there is a significant relationship between noise levels and vehicle net weight and tyre widths."

I've added a new feature to Transit Explorer—the database of the world's fixed-guideway transit systems: The ability to compare cities, side by side, at the same scale. Here, for example, is Washington vs. Chicago, and Singapore vs. London! Play around: www.thetransportpolitic.com/transitexplo...

I suspect people willing to do landside train trips between connecting flights is just a miniscule market. Picking up your example, any reasonable person would simply do Beijing-Edinburgh via, say, Frankfurt or any other hub, instead of opting for 2 different London airports.

The event commonly called "French Revolution" lead to a regime change. The event commonly called "Austro-Hungarian Compromise" didn't.

That would make it the only "regime change" in history, where the exact same person ruled as a monarch over the exact same territory before and after the event. It was a federalization attempt that partially restored the status Hungary had before 1848 (nobody counts 1848 as a regime change either).

Austria and Hungary were under consolidated Habsburg rule since 1526. What came into existence in 1867, was just the latest stage of a long constitutional evolution. The Republic of Venice, used for comparison's sake, had more dramatic constitutional shifts in its history.

In related news: Later this year, Line 22 will open, and Beijing will claim the last record NYC still holds, i.e. "most stations". In fairness, Beijing could be seen as already holding that record, depending on what lines and how you want to count transfer stations, but with Line 22 it's settled.

In 2025, Austria started rebuilding the Lueg bridge on the international Brenner highway, routinely reducing road capacity to 1 lane per direction. This lead to apocalyptic news coverage, with highway managers predicting "100 km long traffic jams". Unsurprisingly, nothing of this ever happened.

Isn't this a function of the UK attracting more immigrants with academic degrees (= higher socio-economic status to begin with) than continental Europe? Which, in turn, is downstream from the fact that English is - unlike German, Italian or Estonian - a global language in education?

South Tyrol - otherwise a good example for excellent public transport in a mostly rural area - doesn't put signs with the name of the bus stops at the bus stops. I find this bewildering, it's such a transparent and economic way to communicate to people what bus stop they are currently at.
