A strange dog jumped on me while I was waiting in line yesterday, so I petted her. Her owner (a woman) caught up and said: "That's odd. She doesn't usually like men. Never, in fact." I just smiled, stayed with the dog until it was my turn. One of the high points of my week.

In my 22 years living here, I have never seen a desert #tortoise pose like this. I thought it was injured, but it appears it was just high on grass. 😂 Zoomed away so quickly about 20 min. later (and up the steep rock wall), I couldn't get my cam out fast enough to photograph)!

Desert tortoise looks like it is swimming on dirt -- back legs "floating" behind and front lets at odd angles.

I may have shared this before somewhere, but here’s some katydid faces from Costa Rica, a land of many fine bugs

A collage of nine colorful katydid faces. Most have tall, rectangular heads large eyes of variable color, green, red, yellow, white, bright blue. Most have “staring” pseudopupils, a trick of the light and human facial recognition. On several, the three simple eyes are quite plainly seen, two between the antennae and one below those. Most are green, but some are brown and one has a bright blue face. Several are ornamented with a “forehead” horn or crown of spikes.

While photographing Mount Rainier last week, I noticed the morning light beginning to reach the upper ridges above the dark forest below. I liked the contrast between the bright snow and rock on Rainier and the layers of trees beneath it. One of those scenes that made me stop and take a closer look

Mount Rainier rises above a dark evergreen forest, with warm morning light catching the upper snowfields, glaciers, and exposed rock. The mountain fills much of the frame while the dense forest below adds depth and scale. A clear blue sky surrounds the summit, emphasizing the contrast between the bright mountain and darker trees.
