the most accurate and succinct description of where we are at with AI
Behind the escalating warnings about superintelligence is a more fundamental issue, critics argue: There is no established path showing that today’s AI systems will surpass the smartest humans, much less a scientific basis for calculating the likelihood that such systems will destroy humanity. Yet the doomer narrative has increasingly overshadowed AI’s more immediate and concrete risks, while boosting the very companies whose products are being portrayed as extraordinarily powerful and potentially uncontrollable.

Its all in the math
To get yourself into SBF’s mindset, consider whether you would play the following godlike game for real. In this game, there’s a 51 percent chance that you create another Earth but also a 49 percent chance that you destroy all human life. If you’re using expected value thinking, and if you think that human life has positive value, you must play this game. SBF said he would play this game. And he said he would keep playing it, double or nothing, over and over again. With expected value thinking, the slightly higher chance of creating more value requires endlessly risking the annihilation of humanity.

We are all living inside the mind of a geeky socially avoidant 8 year old boy
The biography it sketches is consistent: a bunch of boys identified as exceptional at eight, told they were was smarter than everyone else, left alone with a computer upon struggling with social interaction, and delivered to adulthood precocious, socially misread, and never once in a room where everyone else understood them. Silicon Valley inevitably draws these folks in. Rationalism is where they find their meaning and community.

Me trying to explain the insanity of the tech scene at a networking breakfast yesterday and realising half way through that I sounded like a maniac. Full quote in alt. www.iankduncan.com/personal/202...
Follow the connections out from that room and you pass through some genuinely strange territory. A Harry Potter fanfic used as a recruiting pipeline. Psychological workshops that former participants describe as coercive. A program for breeding smarter children, promoted by an AI institute. A sex worker from Idaho who became one of the subculture’s most-read writers and now runs an AI-doom propaganda residency with Grimes, Elon Musk’s ex-girlfriend. A splinter sect that fled to tugboats and whose members have been linked to six deaths. And a blogger who wanted to abolish democracy, found the ear of several billionaire patrons, and watched his ideas come to fruition in the vice president’s office.

I am aware, that if you are not lurking on the internet as much as I do, of how utterly insane that paragraph sounds. However, every bit of it is heavily documented by numerous source

In USA, 20 year olds know only Trump world. Violence, extremism, hatred. The world the far right has been plannning for decades. You and I remember a more hopeful, peaceful time. They don’t. Such a great article, talking to kids about their view of the world.
An administration fueled by extremism has promised violence against everyone she loves. How can she stop thinking about that?

“I wake up, I go to class, and I pretend everything is fine,” she said. “Apathy is better, I don’t know a more peaceful world, so in this one I will keep marching forward.”

I often think of the final scene in the tv show Secret River. Its the most devastating depiction of what happened, and how quickly.
Just over 70 years after the First Fleet landed in Australia in 1788, only seven per cent of Australia's pre-colonial population was estimated to have survived.

But perhaps most alarming to Lines, ChatGPT’s memory feature seemed to build a psychiatric profile, allegedly parsing inputs related to his mental health conditions and then using that sensitive information to maximize his engagement

Welland Canal is the only shipping route between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. approximately 26.3 billion dollars’ worth American goods pass through the Canadian canal every year. it’d be a real shame if Canada were to rename the Welland Canal to, oh, say, the Strait of Our Moose, and close it down.

Here ya go! Mum died of Hodgkins Lymphoma, Dad died of a heart attack.
Both of Graham's parents died when he was a student at the University of South Carolina. "His mother, Millie Graham, died at age 52 of Hodgkin lymphoma. She was soon followed by his father, F.J. — known in his hometown of Central as 'the Dude' — who died of a heart attack at age 69. Graham's only sister, Darline, was just 13 years old," according to WGBH. FJ Graham died of a "massive heart attack" in his sleep, according to Politico.

The USAID cuts, then, were a dry run for the much larger abandonment of responsibility for the civilizational dead weight that may be necessary if and when climate change and/or other problems worsen humanitarian conditions for the global poor in unforeseen ways.

Wow Enslaved government.
The push became limited towards an enslaved government (disguised as “small government”). A wealthy man’s tollbooth could be imposed on those public services that could not be axed (yet) by “privatisation.” They worked to reverse the new protections from corporate injury. They fought to achieve a tax strike by the wealthy, leaving that contribution to community only to be paid by the salaried. Somebody had to pay for the police who protected the affluent’s property, the courts which protected their business dealings and the armed forces that protected their investments abroad.

Wikipedia says
Since the 1949 proclamation of the People's Republic of China, elections have been highly constrained by the CCP's monopoly on power, limitations on free speech, and party control over nominations.[4][5][6] Elections are not pluralistic as no opposition is allowed.[7][8] Limited direct elections, except in the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, have occurred only at the local level people's congresses and village committees, with all candidate nominations preapproved by the CCP

There is no bad news here
Europeans are running studies on where they would store their data or process their payments should friction with the U.S. escalate, and how well their American-made weaponry would operate without Washington’s authorization. Nations whose empires once spanned the globe are now stuck trying to extricate themselves from their humbling dependency on American technology and military power, without provoking the U.S.

Reminds me of the many discoveries of the clitoris (although at least it WAS discovered)
Fallopio (he of Fallopian tube fame) claimed of the clitoris in 1561 that “it is so hidden that I was the first to discover it” (in Stringer & Becker, 2010, p. 132). Skipping forward in time, 16th and 17th century anatomists Caspar Bartholin of Denmark (the Bartholin’s gland was named after him), Jean Riolan the Younger from France (who seems to have been denied eponymous fame), and Regnier de Graaf from Holland (after whom the Graafian follicle on the ovary was named) all took a turn at saying “I found it!”.

That seems really obscure. I had to go look up the link between ME/CFS and mycotoxins. www.rthm.com/resources/bl...
Toxic mold exposure from water-damaged buildings may be an overlooked trigger for ME/CFS, MCAS, and Long COVID.

Mycotoxins can disrupt cellular energy, trigger mast cell degranulation, and cause severe neuroinflammation.

Healing requires strict environmental remediation, targeted antioxidant support, and careful use of binders.

Who's behind the AI mask???
Generative AI is harmful enough when we understand it as a conventional technology, but if we confuse fluency at generating text with consciousness or moral agency, we’re at risk of assigning responsibility to entirely the wrong parties whenever anyone uses a chatbot.

They just have to let the right boat go to the wrong coordinates at the right time, and the internet in Dubai goes dark for 5 months while Alcatel Submarine Networks politely declines to send a repair ship into an active war zone. Luddites, for mine, were about protecting the very human craftsmanship that was destroyed by the machines. Not sure what I make of this perpective.
The movement was a violent defense of guild privilege, male supremacy, and craft hierarchy against the leveling forces of industrial modernity. They could have fought for equality and justice; they chose instead to fight to remain the petty bosses of their own towns

The hollow words of a government intent only on its own survival.
We are not being lied to in the blunt, brazen way of a Howard or a Trump; we are being massaged. The government tells us soothing, technically defensible things that are systematically designed to obscure the harder truths underneath. This gap between what is said and what is done is not accidental; it is the point. It is the method.

The thing about all this AI hype is that anyone who uses it in any serious way knows its just that.
Later, when I ask Claude to draft a version of this story, it fabricates roughly half the quotes, exactly the kind of hallucination Askell’s work is supposed to prevent. “You’re absolutely right,” chirps Claude when I point this out. “I apologize!” I pray it’s doing better in examining MRIs for cancer patients. But Askell is bullish, insisting AI will become “better than most of us at most things, at least in terms of intellectual tasks.”

His wife, Ivana, is an ex-Olympic skier, ex-model, something of a Trump tower herself, famed for her astounding couture wardrobe. She runs some of his hotels and casinos with a rod of iron that is lovingly admired in the book. It is said that for tax purposes he gives her only a dollar a year, and all the dresses she can buy.
