The @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social Global Predictions report is out today, showing that three-quarters of Brits expect large-scale public unrest in 2026. But is their any cause for optimism? My colleague Gideon Skinner was on Times this morning to discuss 👇

In today's #Budget, the Chancellor is grappling with entrenched pessimism about the state of the British economy. While opinion remains split on debt reduction versus public service funding, there's a clear appetite for balanced budgets and lower taxes. www.ipsos.com/en-uk/half-b...

Widespread nostalgia for the old days, with many saying things were better back in 1975
Given the choice, people would prefer to have been born in 1975 rather than 2025 by a margin of almost two to one.
000
Trinh Tu @trinhtu.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
So why so much nostalgia? We found widespread dissatisfaction with the direction of our country, a persistent theme in recent years. But on a more positive note, the quality of healthcare is one area where Brits see improvement, showing our protectiveness and pride in the NHS.

Trinh Tu @trinhtu.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
But it's worth noting that life in 1975 wasn't all smooth sailing. The economy was struggling, inflation was high, and social tensions were running strong - things that complicate the idea that those years were simply “better times”.

In our latest @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social survey, we asked people questions around a simple theme: is life getting better? When we asked people to look back to 1975 (the year that Ipsos was founded!), they perceive a nation that was happier and more secure. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/11...

📊 A stark finding from @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social data: Only 15% of Britons believe the party is poised to lead, marking their lowest confidence level since 1994. However, our data indicates a notable lack of faith across the political spectrum, with 58% sceptical of Labour's merit for re-election.

When it comes to the education system itself, the #1 challenge cited by the UK public is a lack of funding. This worry is 11 points above the global average, showing a stark awareness of the resource strain on our schools.

Trinh Tu @trinhtu.bsky.social · 26/08/2025
This isn't just a fleeting concern; it's backed by a desire for firm action. 63% support banning smartphones in schools, and 70% support  a ban on social media for all children under the age of 14 - a clear signal that the public is worried about the impact of tech on our youth.

Trinh Tu @trinhtu.bsky.social · 26/08/2025
Yet, this pride is on a collision course with deep anxiety. What’s striking is where the UK deviates from the global consensus. While most countries see youth mental health as the top challenge, Britons point squarely at social media & technology (34%).

Our latest @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social Global Education Monitor uncovers a fascinating paradox in how the British public views its education system. On one hand, pride is high – nearly half rate our system as 'good', placing the UK 5th in our 30-country study. bit.ly/4mRS42h
