Insomnia sucks. At least the moon is pretty and at 14 degrees it's positively balmy on my Ōtepoti porch. Bring on the dawn chorus.

Pretty happy with my double-sided @greens.org.nz party endorsement over here. 💚 Cannot understand why there are any Labour ones at all tbh.

This juxtaposition. 🤦‍♀️ Spare a thought for dual citizens of countries where both have horrific rw governments and are heading into general elections just a few days apart. We really get double the feed fun, don't we @kiwistevemc.bsky.social ?

The related stories list tells the tale.
A screenshot of the related stories list under the article above. There are 5 shown, and all 5 are reports of cases against police officers for sex crimes.

Aotearoa: we have ONE DAY LEFT to make submissions on this and four other bills. If anyone’s stuck for inspo on either the Conservation or Gender Definition bills HMU and I’ll share my PDFs. You might want to tone down my anger a bit though. Or maybe not. #nzpol

I cut this way too close, whanau, but finally completed my submission on NZ First’s horrific and hateful anti-trans bill. You have 4 days remaining to add your voice. #KillTheBill

Screw it. Made my own call to action. I wish I had a Kiwi policy example but I think the point stands. Young people need to register and vote or old people will decide their fate, then kick the bucket. vote.nz/enrol WDYT? Should I print a stack and plaster them all over Otago Uni? #nzpol
A graphic from YouGov showing where Brexit voters now stand, compared to how they voted back then. Notably around 3.2 million people who voted to 'Leave' the EU have since died - that's 18.4% of the 17.4 million who voted that way, AND, the VAST majority of 3 million new voters want to 'Rejoin'.

Right there with you.

Wait. I thought you had to be a permanent resident? My husband is on a resident visa with no set leave date (afaik). He hasn't been here 12 months yet but I thought he had to wait for official PR status (~2 years)...? This popover is kind of light on details. Would love to be able to confirm.
A screenshot of a popover from the NZ electoral website explaining an eligibility criterion. It says: "Resident for electoral purposes
For electoral purposes, you are a resident if you’re in New Zealand legally and not required to leave within a specific time, and have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more.

If you have to leave New Zealand by a set date
You are not a resident for electoral purposes and not eligible to enrol to vote. This includes people who have student, work, or visitor permits.

If you’re Australian, Niuean, Tokelauan or a Cook Islander
You can enrol after you have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more.

If you’re working for the public service overseas
If you’re on duty outside NZ as a public servant, a member of the Defence Force or you’re a family member of one, you can still enrol to vote."

Ōtepoti Botanic Gardens really put on a show yesterday 💚 #DunnerStunner

Do you not have the 'Save' option?
A screenshot of the two preceding messages, both with the save icon circled, one, a solid blue bookmark, in the selected state, and the other a grey outline bookmark in the unselected state.

Facts. Everyone I know and care about is deeply scared and deeply unhappy with where we're at. A friend sent this.
A Venn diagram with the caption "Somehow we ended up here".

There's an orange bubble on the left labeled "apocalypse", and a very small overlap with a blue bubble on the right, labeled "having to go to work". There's an arrow pointing at the small overlap.

Regular Americans do all the work, generating all the business success, and yet the very few in power - the rich and the corrupt - take it and leave most people struggling. It is long past time for us to stop being "obedient civil servants". (Page is from On Tyranny by @timothysnyder.bsky.social)
A page from Timothy Snyder's book On Tyranny that says: 5. Remember Professional Ethics. When political leaders set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become more important. It is hard to subvert a rule-of-law state without lawyers, or to hold show trials without judges. Authoritarians need obedient civil servants, and concentration camp directors seek businessmen interested in cheap labor.

Show me any issue in society and I guarantee billionaires caused it, or are benefiting from it, or both. Tax the ultra wealthy into oblivion, then fund healthcare and education and programs that lift us all up as a society.
A screenshot from the linked ProPublica article about Utah farmers. The quote says "they die by suicide at the third highest rate by vocation in the state, according to State data, behind miners and construction workers."Another screenshot from the linked ProPublica article about Utah farmers. The snippet is a partial quote from a legislator saying "...whether they're a mechanic or whether they're a school teacher or a doctor or someone in agriculture, I just think it would be a little hard to start separating out and creating mental health programs for individual industries".

Love this small act of (I hope) resistance in Google Fonts, replacing "the quick brown fox..." with text from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Maybe it's not new but I appreciated it for this time in history...
