Even before I finished reading, I thought "US Maple". Would you agree that Swordfish / Rain Dogs / Frank's Wild Years Tom Waits often borrows from the Beefheart ouevre? Maybe The Fall, at times -- esp. the Perverted by Language LP. Less bluesy, but the similarities are there.

Most overrated album of the 1980s. Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon heard African music and suddenly were like "oOoOhHh, I wanna be African tOoOoOo!" I listen to and love a lot of African musicians, but never did my honky brain think that I could emulate their style or have the chops to play like them.

I've been listening to a lot of new bluegrass and alt-country artists lately and musing on why I never had before. I think it's because my exposure to country music as a kid came from Hee Haw and hokey Kenny Rogers crossover hits. Country music was as alien to my world as gangsta rap.
