It's like how "Transgendered" became "incorrect", when 20 years ago we absolutely described ourselves as that, as in, we are gendered (verb) in a trans-sexual way, the way we are gendered is seen as incongruous or as crossing/transiting a boundary...

A friend who went to public school once observed to me that all his male PE teachers were ex-Doc Martens League footballers, and all his female PE teachers were still playing for England, and never has the way that women's sports are underfunded and treated as a novelty for the rich been so stark.

Great explanatory thread about the new CPS guidance on "sex by deception". The key is, it's hard to know whether or not someone else knows you're trans, and many trans people just don't talk about it much, or at all. Not to mention, this adds a whole legal layer of risk to gloryholes and darkrooms.

This incidentally is why I am always wary of "stranger danger" stuff posing as feminist: Bc when you imagine "A strange man in an alley" you picture him as unalike the men you know as possible- Which often means if you're white, the man you see as the danger, is a man of colour. It gets racist fast.

Even the threat of this reduces trans people's quality of life: If you know it's coming, you reduce your dose, trying to save a few days' worth at a time so that you have a buffer for when the prescription inevitably is delayed. Meaning your hormone levels are chronically low, which is bad for you.

GPs cite “lack of expertise”. Then bloody learn. At Alice’s inquest Dr Barratt Tavistock GIC lead clinician said he could teach GPs how to treat trans people in a couple of hours. It’s not lack of knowledge. It’s lack of will to treat. Any doctor who won’t treat any patient shouldn’t be a doctor.

That's my point, his "tradition" isn't a real tradition, what he's talking about is liking an animal, or maybe feeling a connection with the symbolism applied to an animal. There is no living tradition of anything similar to spirit animals in modern Irish or any Scandinavian cultures.

Mr. Streeting,

I am writing to you to express my condemnation of yesterday's decision to indefinitely extend the puberty blocker ban for trans youth under 18. I am calling on the government to reverse this decision immediately.

Puberty blockers are safe medications that ensure children - cis or trans - can have the space, time, and care they need to be a kid so they are able to grow up and flourish into happy and healthy adults. The ban explicitly targets trans children but is not extended to cisgender or intersex children for the simple and obvious reason that the medications are known to be safe. It is an ideologically driven ban with no scientific merit.

As a queer man a similar age to myself, you ought to know the impact of scaremongering and misinformation, whether Section 28 or barriers to care during the AIDS crisis. I was outraged to hear you try to justify your actions in parliament in extending the ban on the basis of the homophobic abuse you received in the past, abuse no doubt driven or amplified by the endemic homophobia of the Britain we both grew up in. Today’s transphobia is a blatant repetition of the gay panic that fuelled that hatred.

Currently, only 100 children are prescribed puberty blockers and the waiting list time for under-18s is more than 4 years long. I want a government that will focus on the real crisis - the lack of adequate care for young people in the UK. Not just those seeking assistance with their gender but across the whole of the NHS waiting lists are obscene. Demonising trans people and punishing trans kids specifically does nothing to remedy that situation.

Despite the relatively low number of children receiving puberty blockers or who might seek them, the evidence is unquestionable that this will have a devastating impact on their psychological health. Refusing puberty blockers is tantamount to forced detransition or conversion therapy and it is gravely concerning that this is only another step in dismantling the already torrid state of trans healthcare in the UK.

We can only hope that those affected survive this ordeal. The blood of those that don’t will be on your hands.

In closing, I want to draw your attention to the young trans people who camped outside your office last night in the freezing cold to protest this cruel ban. They deserve to get the same dignity and opportunities as their cis peers. They should not have to build their young lives around political activism just to get basic healthcare.

Drop the ban.
