Statement from Trans Pride Scotland on the Passing of the Conversion Therapy Motion at STUC Congress:

Trans Pride Scotland welcomes the passing of the motion at STUC Congress calling for action on conversion therapy. This is an important and long-overdue step in recognising the harm caused by these abusive practices and in affirming the dignity, autonomy, and humanity of LGBTQ+ people across Scotland.

For far too long, survivors, campaigners, trade unionists, and our communities have been forced to wait while governments drag their heels on an issue that demands urgency. Warm words and promises are no substitute for action. While we welcome this motion, it must go further.

It is not enough for the next Scottish Government merely to publish a Conversion Practices Bill. The bill must be introduced, debated, and passed within the first year of the next Parliament. Anything less risks yet another cycle of delay, consultation without conclusion, and political cowardice.

We are clear: the Labour government has been shamefully slow on this issue. At a time when trans people are facing relentless attacks in public discourse and in policy, continued inaction is not neutral it is a political choice. Dragging their feet on banning conversion practices sends a dangerous message that the lives and safety of trans people can be treated as an afterthought.

Any legislation introduced in Scotland must provide full and explicit protections for trans people, non-binary people, and agender people. A ban that excludes or weakens protections for gender-diverse communities would be fundamentally unacceptable and would fail those most often targeted by coercive and harmful practices.
We are also calling on all political parties standing in Scotland Parliament Elections to sign the pledge from End Conversion Therapy Scotland, and to make a clear public commitment to delivering a comprehensive, trans-inclusive ban within the first year of the next Parliament. This is a moment for political leadership, and every party must be prepared to state clearly where they stand.
Conversion therapy in all its forms is abuse. There can be no loopholes, no carve-outs, and no compromises with those who seek to legitimise harm under the guise of belief, counselling, or so-called therapy.
Trans Pride Scotland will continue to demand bold, uncompromising legislation that protects every member of our community and holds the next government to account from day one.

Deeply disappointed both @scottishlabour.bsky.social and @snp.org failed to visit the TPS stall at the STUC Congress. However, we’d like to thank Gillian Mackay and Ross Greer from @scottishgreens.org for showing up and showing solidarity. Get out there and vote on the 7th of May - demand better!

Whilst we had a lovely time at the STUC Congress, we found ourselves deeply disappointed both Scottish Labour Party and the Scottish National Party (SNP) failed to visit the Trans Pride Scotland stall at the event. But on a positive, we’d like to extend our thanks to Gillian Mackay and Ross Greer from Scottish Green Party for showing up and showing solidarity.

On the 7th of May, make sure you demand better from your government.
