Today I was invited to take part in BBC Politics North talking about the 90th anniversary of the Jarrow March, opportunities for young people and some of the big issues facing our communities. A really good discussion with Richard Moss and other guests on the programme.

I have contacted the Interim Chairman of Gateshead Football Club following concerns about the club’s financial position. I've asked for an urgent update on the club’s progress towards securing new investment and the steps being taken to provide greater stability for players, staff & supporters.

As Chair of Women’s Football APPG, it was great to meet Sanjay and Sam from Kick It Out to discuss how we can work together to tackle discrimination & support growth of women’s football. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to champion our local football clubs here in Jarrow and Gateshead East too

Today marks the start of Black History Month. We must honour the history, celebrate the culture and recognise the achievements and contributions of Black communities across the UK and beyond. We must also stand together to challenge racism and discrimination that too many Black people still face.

What a Labour Conference this year - I had an amazing time catching up with local Labour members, with friends and comrades across the trade union movement, and of course some of the brilliant Balaena apprentices from Hebburn.

My full speech at the Labour for Trans Rights rally at Conference. This is an incredibly difficult time for trans & non-binary people, facing a relentless attack on their rights & dignity. I want everyone in our community to know that I’ll never stop standing alongside you & fighting for equality.

Good to hear my good friend Angela Eagle will bring back our water companies into public ownership. No more shit in our seas. We will end the rip off privatisation of our water ways.

It is devastating to hear that hardly a quarter of the nurdles that fell into the River Tyne have been recovered That does not diminish the incredible efforts of volunteers who have given up their time to support the clean-up. Without their dedication, the recovery operation would have been slower

The Guide Dogs stall is always a favourite of mine to stop by at Labour Party Conference I know lots of constituents got in touch asking me to stop by & discuss the challenges that can affect the independence of guide dog owners, including blocked pavements & the unsafe use of e-bikes & e-scooters

It was great to stop by and speak with Specsavers at this year’s Labour Party Conference about access to care. With a Specsavers branch in Jarrow, I know how important it is for local people to have access to high-quality sight and hearing care in their own neighbourhood.

78yrs ago, a Lab Govt established our NHS on principle that everyone deserves healthcare regardless of their ability to pay However the social care we may need as we grow older or less able, was left outside that promise. It left people to shoulder an increasingly heavy cost as we live longer lives

Good to hear from our Deputy Leader Lucy Powell this morning and acknowledge how much we have to do to bring back hope in our education From tackling the number of NEETs to ensuring we deal with the crisis in SEND provision; and her commitment that we will not have a one-size-fits-all for education

It was a pleasure to officially open the new playground at Hill Top Primary School yesterday. A huge congratulations to headteacher Anita Bell, her dedicated team, and the governors for turning an empty yard into an interactive space where young people can play, socialise, learn and self-regulate.

This week is Organ Donation Week. Over 8,700 people are currently waiting for a transplant, and the waiting list is the highest its ever been. It takes two minutes to confirm a decision on the Donor Register, but this could help save up to nine lives. register.organdonation.nhs.uk/start

Reports of sewage pollution affecting Monkton Burn in Springwell Park, Jarrow, have understandably caused much concern. Residents should be able to enjoy their local parks and waterways without being confronted by sewage pollution and a strong sewage smell.

I’m deeply concerned by the decision of the Reform-led Sunderland City Council to withdraw its support for Show Racism the Red Card. For more than 30 years, this brilliant charity has worked in our schools and communities, using education to challenge racism and prejudice.

Good public transport is ultimately about opportunity: whether someone can get to work, whether children can get to school, whether people can reach healthcare and essential services, and whether communities across our region are properly connected.

I am deeply disappointed that South Tyneside’s Reform-led Council has chosen to press ahead with closing STANLEY’s nurseries, despite the strength of feeling from families, staff and communities across our borough:

The government is right to recognise that the SEND system needs reform. But as we develop these proposals, there is one principle that must remain at the heart of everything they do: a child’s needs must come first.
