“What’s a Midwest summer like?” Here’s a random squash growing out of a tiny crack in parking lot asphalt.

Just reminding everyone that Grete Waitz set a European junior record the year The Carpenters’ “Close To You” came out and was 4th in the NYC Marathon the year Public Enemy’s “Fear of a Black Planet” was released.

One free butternut squash plant six weeks ago, about 500ccs of rich dark homemade compost, and Midwest sun and rain and now the vines spread 3.5 meters.

Idea for a mystery novel and/or film… Rural midwestern farming community. Two township trustees found dead from shotgun blasts. First murders in the area anyone can remember. Well-liked, apparently no reason anyone would want to harm them. 1/

I understand that losing weight will require eating less. Gradually waking up to the horror that it means eating less.

Spent eleven days in Edmonton at the 2001 Worlds. Not surprised. It felt like a small town of 1.3 million people, and sports absolutely define small towns.

Canuck friends: how much do the Calder and Kelly Cup finals matter on the north side of the border? In other words, would anyone besides Trois-Rivières and Abbotsford fans even know who’s playing?

I am curious to see what effect the troubles are having on races. Doing a relay next week at an ultra being held just a short drive from Port Huron/Sarnia yet only three Canadians in the whole event (+/- 500 total entries).

When I was the right age to watch Sesame Street, I didn’t understand that there were different TV channels. I just knew Sesame Street, Cpt Kangaroo, and my other favorite shows. So I didn’t realize sometimes I watched SS on PBS (USA) and sometimes on CBC (Canada).

A Gen Xer travels in Canada: the Toronto subway “doors are closing” chime is the first three notes of the Sesame Street theme. In Montréal it’s the first three notes of the In Search Of theme. Each describes the city a bit. What would be the appropriate TV show theme sample for your city?

Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre are in Montréal today. I don’t know which but one is staying in our hotel. Six RCMP officers in the next booth over at the local diner.

Given how many businesses and organizations major marathon directors have to work with in order to put on their races, there has to be a nonzero number of races that require deals with organized crime. This simple idea would make for an entertaining film.

Just being clear, it was that our march was an unbroken line of people at least 1000m long

A report from Toledo I can’t estimate how many, but my running experience says our march was at least 1000m long. (Metro area of 500k people). It was also 99.9% white, that’s unusual here. Leaders didn’t do a good job reaching minority communities. If they had it would’ve been 2x as big.

A lot can happen in three years. So this is idle speculation. But if things keep going as they are, in many countries it will be political suicide to send a team to the ‘24 Olympic Games.

The team most affected by this is the Buffalo Bills. The building materials for its new stadium are now heavily taxed and a large % of fans will not be setting foot in the USA nor spending $0.02 here. The Lions have Canadians fans too but not many since SW Ont is lightly populated compared to DTW.

My father was white trash of the most wonderful kind, but still 100% white trash. This is exactly how he ate spaghetti. Even 5 year old me knew better. Then I married an Italian-American whose reaction was sheer horror.

Still my favorite celebrity marathoners of the “no shit, that fast?” kind are NFL hall of fame defensive tackle Alan Page (3:27:50 *during* his NFL career) and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (3:41:49 at age 50)

Not sure if this is in fact *that* Bryan Cranston, though it seems likely. He would have been 29 and 30. “I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it.” That definitely sounds like a marathoner.

You should really only drink Mike's Hard Lemonade 1-2 times a week. The rest of week should be for Mike's Easy Lemonade or Mike's Conversational Lemonade.
