I was able to do that on my last (and current) car. It was great! No financial documents to sign! No discussion of down payments and interest rates. Just handed them a cashier's check, and we were out of there. Makes all the scrimping and saving seem worthwhile.

Nice illustration! I think he may be my Derby horse, though I'm also partial to Renegade and Silent Tactic.

I would have loved to seen him live. He's my poster boy for why good pedigrees can include more than the current big names.

Nope, it's California Chrome. We saw Bernardini in the Preakness. You might be able to tell - we're East Coasters. I've only been to Del Mar for, like 3 races, in between a wedding and reception. Otherwise, east of Prairie Meadows (my home track for two years.)

The cold may have kept some of the older folks home. Wasn't it something like 35 degrees at noon?

Yep, younger is easier in a lot of ways. And sadly, as you age, the wisdom that says "Go to bed" kind of gets ignored.

Just fyi - the National Federation of the Blind provides FREE white canes to any blind person in the country. There is a brief application in English that some folks may need help with, but no one should have to use curtain rods. More info: nfb.org/programs-ser...

Thirding this. I asked for YBFaH for Christmas every year they were available. Didn't always get them. And now, my darn eyesight makes it hard to read the ones I have. I simply loved their year-in-review section, and gosh -- the stories they picked were first rate.

Yet another adhd thing I didn't know about. And I never even notice I've run into anything until this bruise appears. Sigh.

Sing we for love and idleness, Naught else is worth the having. Though I have been in many a land, There is naught else in living. And I would rather have my sweet, Though rose-leaves die of grieving, Than do high deeds in Hungary To pass all men's believing. -Ezra Pound

Also library borrows can turn into purchases. It has been decades since I bought a book that I didn’t first read from the library. And of course, once I read the book, I can recommend it to other folks who may also purchase it.

I am already so tired of AI misinformation. I know this result saying Sovereignty won the Triple Crown is wrong, because I watched all of the Triple Crown races this year. Bet on them too. But what of folks who don't follow racing much? Do they think we had a Triple Crown Winner in 2025?

A screenshot of an AI result in Google that indicates that Sovereignty won the Triple Crown in 2025. This is not true. Sovereignty did not win the Preakness, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown. Journalism won the Preakness, denying Sovereignty of the Crown.

I have watched the PA Supreme Court on PCNTV, as one does, and I have been impressed by all three of these judges, esp. Christine Donohue (when she puts on those glasses it’s getting serious). Dougherty and Wecht are also really competent, and the three don’t always agree. All seem independent.

As a Pittsburgher, I am seldom concerned with the World Series. But for some reason this year, I’m just riveted. didn’t hurt that the Blue Jays pitcher in game 1 was from my hometown. Still, I can’t figure out why I’m watching this.

I like to remind people about lifetime limits and the refusal of insurers to sell coverage to people with preexisting conditions. The ACA has issues. But those 2 things alone make it worth saving and fixing.

Oh, this is the first I'm hearing about this. I've enjoyed so many of his books, starting with Metzger's Dog, which I remember as a fun romp of a caper, through the Jane Whitefield novels and even back to the more violent Butcher's Boy. So sorry to learn that he's gone.

This is so true. And no matter how long it's been since you were poor and broke, you still check the prices on the menu first. You are always, always aware of the price of things. @scalzi.com wrote about this years ago at whatever.scalzi.com/2005/09/03/b...
