iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Did you ever have (volunteers) recreate some of these angles in present day? It seems like it would be a nice ongoing project, if it was done in a somewhat organized way (maybe I need to make my way to the Archives sometime and talk to someone)

there was a lot going on at that corner

thanks Duncan- i'm so successful in making it look easy that i forget myself! every time at the end i think "why was that so much work, could have just done this, easy enough..."

i probably will use the time machine next to go back to 2009 where postage was so low that you could order a single book from japan

(i was there to get these) (not giant issues, for some unknown reason-- i was expecting at least 11x17)

011

hey, made it to the comics store (in 1996) (probably not the best use of a time machine)

3300

of course, that's the fun stuff! can't beat comics

thanks Tony! the physical page turn is crucial for entering that last spread too-- the amount of things to orchestrate gets sort of silly with puzzle-pages like these, so I'm not sure where this sense of duty to solve it comes from... (maybe just the "because (i can see) it's there"?)

i'd love to, but health issues made it next to impossible for the past 5-6 years, even the new years card ones were quite a challenge. hopefully can get back to it more soon, without jinxing it...

120

merci beacoup Basile, i'm also glad i'm learning enough french now to be able to read the too-kind words!

(whenever i -can- do any comics i always end up going "oh right, this is what i do, i forgot." since it's been so long. i guess it makes sense it would completely erode your sense of self and wellbeing if you couldn't do the one thing you were good at for years. so it goes)

1110

* done during one of the periodic times where i test if i'm able to get back to doing more comics, and the answer then was a resounding and dispiriting "no" on all fronts-- though it was still fun to do a few pages in the old Where is Jake Ellis mode

1110

sunday plan, anyway, remains: pictures. since I can't share current work, here's a few pages out of a (guest) flashback sequence from last year* hallways and comics don't mix, so it took some doing to boil down what would be a stock "filing down hallway, dipping in and out of doors" scene in a movie

(the hand-drawn SFX didn't make it in, these are from my layouts)

69716

(you know, like the classic denzel washington/liev schreiber movie)

030

a week of manga sleep schedule followed by a day and a half of clear liquids only diet seems like a recipe for ending up in prison, so i can only assume my appointment tomorrow is some sort of a manchurian candidate situation

150

the ladder is short enough that it's no surprise that a lot of people end up using it as a stepladder to a different career

011

yes, i remember taking on a short job for my first publisher and it was a multi-week process and a whole "after talking to six people we managed to approve" situation just to have them match my starting 2008 rate (without any adjustments)-- and even this was probably ten years ago already

110

looks like the bluesky carousel will show you ten pictures but it will crop all of them- great job. some day we might have the technology to show the whole picture, but not yet

080

even on a budget of less than nothing these are still some of the best-looking movies ever made. in the gospel according to st. matthew, he's often working with nothing but flat plain and a cloud, and it still feels bigger than all three dune movies put together

1200

they say protein for breakfast so throwing a dart at some Pasolini pictures (these are all from the same one; almost a distressing amount of great composition and photography)

1220

it would be funny (depressing) if someone made a graph of what page rates should be up to now if they followed inflation and everything else. probably a tidy 3000-4000 for an inked page (still too low for doing the drawing work of ten people)

130

old times new times / out at night #fotozozo (zero chance this survives the bsky compression, i really need to set up a site for these)

no tripod, but at least not taking a photo from a moving car

0210

i bought the entire book because of that title! and then there's printouts of his notes for the book and all kinds of stuff, you will get a real kick out of it

any screen of the "you were meaning to do this specific thing, how about doing this other thing instead?" variety

050

adhd or not, "don't pop up an 'update app' notification in the middle of the screen when i'm opening it in a hurry to just do one thing, because i will do it and then it'll take me 45 minutes to remember the thing again" should really be part of the basic accessibility settings on every device

1120

the excerpts are from George Saunders' "Lincoln in the Bardo", and that last bit is from Adam Moss's "The Work of Art", that has a length interview about writing Lincoln (and a lot of other good interviews with a bunch of interesting people, well worth checking out)

100

friday plan: seven of yesterday's eight things (even more reasonable, maybe too reasonable really)

2150

i don't think i have ever seen this layer mode and not thought of one of the funniest lines in barton fink

0100

#FOMOTWT (fear of minmaxing on the wrong thing)

though these days i will accept* 1/8th of a thing *no choice

0190

thursday plan: eight things (that seems like a reasonable number)

since this turned out to be way easier than expected, i guess I'll try flying or surgery next

020

me: i'm used to tinkering with digital things, but surely i'm not qualified nor equipped to fix anything in the physical world physical world: it's just two big springs

1212

*having = realizing that i have

what helped me most was having two modes of picture-taking: fast (small cameras/longer lenses) and slow (low ISO cinder blocks)-- so i just try to decide on which of the two before leaving the house

110

i'll assume it was this one
