While the church uses a simple half lap log construction, the rectory uses a higher level technique called the dovetail notch. This is where trapezoid shaped cuts are made in the logs so they fit together tightly. This makes the walls strong and helps keep out wind and water.

Across the Yukon, you'll find vernacular log buildings. Vernacular buildings are functional and reflect local materials and knowledge. Logs were used to build cabins, caches, stores, and roadhouses. Some still stand at historic sites like Huchá Hudän/ Fort Selkirk and Gindèhchik/Rampart House.
