FUCK CANCER! Out of the country this week attending my grandmother's funeral. She's one of the most important people in my life. This has been one of the hardest weeks of my life. I'm not okay (and won't be for a long time), but I am okay. Much love to you all. Hug your loved ones, cherish them.

FUCK CANCER!

On September 11, I got the phone call I never wanted to hear…my grandmother finally took her eternal rest after 5 years of battling cancer. A very important figure in my life, gone…

It’s been really hard to put into words what the past few days have been like for me and my family.

Am I okay? Yes

Am I really okay?….probably not.

My grandmother was one of the most important people in my life and no matter how much I braced myself for that day, it doesn’t make the pain hurt any less. Seeing my grandma in a casket, for the very last time, left me feeling empty, like a part of my life is just gone.

I’m not gonna shout to the sky why she had to be taken when she still had so much life left to give. I know that sometimes, life just is that way. I wish there were so many things I could say to her but I know she would have been proud of everything I’ve been able to achieve. I live in my own house, with a wonderful, lovely and supportive partner and two beautiful cats, I have a good job, I’m having fun with my hobbies and occasionally use that hobby to raise a lot of money for charity.

The last time I saw her in person before she departed was Mother’s Day this year, fully knowing there was a good chance it was the last time I got to see her, the last time I got to hold her hand, the last time I got to talk to her, tell her how much I loved her, give her a kiss.

And now she’s gone.

This whole week, I've been replaying in my head all the good times I had with her and reliving all my experiences and even I was a little surprised how much she's shaped my life. And for that I will be forever grateful for her. I am so blessed to have had such a wonderful grandmother who cared for me so much and had so much love to give to not only to me, but to her whole family and her community.

I will keep marching on, continue to live my life as best as I can. It won’t be easy in the short term, but eventually, it will be more manageable.

If I sometimes appear like I’m acting as my old, (weird) self, it’s cause I am trying to keep as close to a mental routine as I can, and making sure that I can keep facing things forward with a positive attitude. I am surrounded by friends and family right now, who are all sharing in the loss, so I am not alone.

I will be returning to prep for AGDQ submissions and upcoming marathons, including next month’s GDQueer run when I come back to the US later this week. I refuse to let the grief take over my life. My way of battling the sadness is to keep moving forward, no matter how slow it is. I choose to celebrate her life by living life, doing the things that make me happy, being a good partner, friend and person.

I know that’s what she would have wanted. You inspire me to be a better person and I will forever work towards being that.

My hope is to one day see this disease rid of once and for all so that no one has to suffer through it. So that no one has to see their loved ones go through something so terrible.
