Wanted to post on my own account about the work going on @tornadoarchive.com from Blue Ayanami, whose tireless work is uncovering a massive number of tornadoes in the 1800s. For example, there are now 60-70 tornadoes on 4/18/1880 and 3/27/1890, and over 100 (!!) in the 1884 Enigma Outbreak. (1/3)

Although not much new information was available for Mexico, the nation's only known violent tornado is now properly recorded on the site. Previously, only the US portion was included, where the tornado caused EF3 damage in Texas.
Track map of the 2007 Piedras Negras F4.Comparison to the NCEI track that was available before the update.

With this update, our records for the Pasillo de los Tornados (BR-AR-UY-PY) go from 635 -> 1138 tornadoes, 134 -> 247 sigtors, and 11 -> 28 violents. Many obvious errors have been corrected, though given the unofficial nature of much of the data, there may still be some.

A massive upgrade to almost all of our Latin American tornado data is now available on the site! We're aware of some additional data still for South America, but as of now we've included as much publicly available information as we could.

Fair enough! Don't feel like you have to though, I don't mind sifting through it/just using the Netherlands stuff since I was gonna end up digitizing it myself anyways.

I manually updated the ratings for Catania and Neede when those dropped but if there's anything else you're aware of that's major lmk.

LatAm is gonna have by far the biggest update, and I might get my hands on even more soon. China is also in the pipeline. Europe needs an update but we have to get back in touch with ESWD. Is there any particular data we should be looking at for the Phillipines? Also thx for the heads up on Japan.

Over the last few months the content team has been revamping our database system to allow for more frequent updates. This of course has delayed site deployments. Along with US 2025 tors, updates to previous datasets and addition of several more are in the works. We look forward to sharing it soon! 🌪️

1/8/2026 7:10 PM CDT update on the current site outage: we are in the process of a server transition and upgrade that will result in downtime until it is complete. Our previous traffic allowance was exceeded with the old provider. We thank you for your patience during this maintenance period.

We've also been working on redoing the environment data, including our own CAPE calculations and laying the foundation for the addition of point-and-click soundings in a future version. We were hoping to release this with the 2024 data, but it's turned into a much bigger project than we anticipated.

You may have noticed some curvature in the map on the above image. We've switched to plotting everything on a globe instead of a flat map, which has the advantage of reducing distortion near the poles, in addition to looking pretty cool. This will be released with the 2024 data.
From a forthcoming release: all documented tornadoes plotted on a globe with the eastern North America, parts of south America, western Africa, and Europe visible. From a forthcoming release: tornadoes the across the US on 6 May 2024 with 500 mb heights, winds, and wind speed at 02Z 7 May.

2024 was a very busy year for tornadoes in the US, so it's taken a while to get all the data processed. We're in the final stages of this task, and the 2024 US data will hopefully be released soon. We're also working on getting updated European data from ESWD, hopefully this summer.
From a forthcoming release: tornadoes in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri on 26 April 2024 along with ERA5 2 m dewpoint, 10 m winds, and MSLP at 20Z 26 April.

In our next database release we will have a data void over the Philippines filled with the Severe Weather Archive of the Philippines (SWAP) dataset. We are thankful of Generich Capuli for donating and maintaining the data! You may view the SWAP project on Zenodo: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
