Hey Capcom! Since you’re bringing back dormant franchises, can we have a HD-2D remaster of Breath of Fire IV please? It already has the most stunning pixel art and animation of any game ever made and doesn’t need much work!

I’m a little obsessed with Caves of Qud atm Yes it’s a 100 hour perma-death RPG deeper than the ocean Yes I die in the first half hour 99% of the time Yes I’m loving it

As a big fan of Fire Emblem, I can’t believe I’m saying Unicorn Overlord is by far the best strategy RPG I’ve ever played and it’s not even close. It’s somehow deeper, has a stunning open world to explore, fantastic music and voice acting and is just as satisfying to play!
A screenshot of a battle taking place in the beautifully painterly video game Unicorn Overlord. From a landscape perspective we see a knight using a lightning blade attack on his opponent, who is an axe wielding knight on horseback.

25. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver For a game made in the 90’s the voice acting, writing, works building and atmosphere still feel ambitious today. A grim, bleak but hopeful action adventure set in the gripping world of Nosgoth, it was often called a “Zelda killer” and it’s not hard to see why!
The scene depicts Raziel, a vampire-turned wraith, stripped of his mortality and hell bent on killing his brothers and his master Kain as he stands before the spectral, translucent Soul Reaver, a twisted sword.

24. Kirby 64 Because @squarewavewitch.bsky.social liked the post, I want to talk about my favourite Kirby game! I love so many Kirby games, they’re all so cute and fun and incredibly creative, but Kirby 64 holds a special place in my heart 🧡 Plus… you can combine abilities in this one!!

23. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask As a child this game terrified me, but I overcame the fear of the looming moon and discovered one of my all time favourite games. Beneath that moon is a world and characters that felt alive, charming and unmatched in its sense of melancholic atmosphere.
A screenshot of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, a remake of the original game that released over 20 years prior. The screenshot shows the protagonist Link in his Deku form (a wooden bipedal creature with a round mouth-like snout and sad, glowing eyes) as he stands in North Clock Town.

The location is mostly soft dirt paths, grass and overgrowth along the high walls that frame the area. A single tree stands in the background, next to a gentle incline that leads to a decorated cave.

To the left of Link is a postman and postbox, and in the distance is a child is trying to pop a balloon with a blow gun, stood near an unusual but friendly map salesman. And to the right is a guard, standing by an exit that leads to the fields of Termina (the world the game takes place in).

22. Final Fantasy VI I played through the entire Pixel Remaster collection in one week, and every single game in it was fantastic (I even like FFII’s unusual levelling mechanic!) but FFVI took the series to a narrative height I didn’t think was possible. A theatrical masterpiece in every way 🧡
The intro credits scene from Final Fantasy VI. It depicts two soldiers and an enslaved magic wielding woman riding mechanical, bipedal machines as they trudge through the snow to the unsuspecting mining village, Narshe.

In a world where magic is almost entirely gone, and rumours have reached the ears of the Gestahlian Empire of a mystical Esper being excavated in the mines of Narshe, this enslaved woman may be key to the empire claiming a terrifying power.

Super Mario Land 2: Original vs Remake ✨ I’m lucky enough to be a pixel artist for this project! #SML2RDX The stage is now fittingly spooky since it’s near the Pumpkin Zone!🌛
A bonus stage in Super Mario Land 2 in its original black and white palette. It doesn’t really match the Halloween theme of the location it’s next to.My interpretation of the bonus stage for the Super Mario Land 2 remake (SML2RDX). It now matches the theme of the nearby Zone with its spooky pumpkin gravestones, moody yet vibrant palette and a starry purple sky and reflective lake. There is a large crescent moon resting on the horizon, smiling.

Fun fact: the moon is the next Zone Mario visits after beating the Pumpkin Zone!

My honest thoughts on the first 5 hours of Mario & Luigi Brothership: It’s really good! There’s a slightly excessive amount of dialogue but other than that it’s great! I love the music, the animation, the art style, the battle system and the concept of sailing across the ocean on an island ship!

21. Halo 3 Probably THE game that defined my teenage years, it was also the first game I played online that wasn’t at a friend’s house. The hype in 2007 for this game was legendary, and it lived up to it in every way. So many great, happy memories playing this with friends using splitscreen!

20. Inscryption A tense and unsettling card game that integrates elements of an escape room to create one of the most riveting and fascinating games I’ve ever played. I can’t spoil how deep this game goes but if you like horror and games like Slay the Spire, you absolutely have to play this!

19. Mass Effect 2 One word: Garrus. Jokes aside it’s my favourite RPG from the Xbox 360 era and part of a trilogy of unbelievably deep games set in one of the most well explored and indulging galaxies in all of gaming. It’s genuinely a trilogy worth fully committing to. Mostly because of Garrus.

18. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I’ve never played a game with so many, lengthy cutscenes. And it’s one of the reasons it’s so good! The world, the amazing cast, the immense music, the story and emotional gut punches this game delivers are all huge achievements. A perfect end to a colossal story arc.

Hey Bluesky, show me the first game you remember playing! My first game was Super Mario All-Stars! When I was a kid I didn’t know that there were consoles before the Super Nintendo and Mega Drive/Genesis, so seeing the NES versions of these games at a friend’s house baffled me 😂

17. Dark Chronicle/Cloud 2 The first game (Dark Cloud) is one I truly love, but the sequel takes everything the first game did and exceeds it! Made by the team who created Professor Layton, it’s an incredible Action RPG with random generated dungeons, evolving weapons and wonderful city building!

15. Banjo-Kazooie My favourite 3D platformer from the N64/PS1 era (sorry Spyro, Crash and Mario). The cosy factor and the overwhelming amounts of charm and quirkiness are off the charts, with Grant Kirkhope’s iconic music and some of the most inventive uses for a playable duo! Banjo-Threeie when?

14. Final Fantasy VII One of the most important games ever made and one of the most poignant stories ever written. The visuals though dated are charming, and everything about this game is truly special, from the story to the gameplay, cutscenes and music. Everybody should try this masterpiece 🧡

13. FEZ Not many games had me as invested and determined to fully unravel it as FEZ did. The way the 2D world is actually 3D, with it rotating 90 degrees with a press of a button means surprises and mystery are always just a press away. And Disasterpeace’s soundtrack is truly something special!

12. Moonleap You play as a little moon guy who changes the world from day to night with each leap, making the world and creatures change with it! It’s smart, simple and short, being a great palate cleanser between bigger, bulkier games! A true hidden gem 🧡

11. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night If you like metroidvanias with RPG elements, I highly recommend this one. it’s possibly the best, and one of the best looking too! It has a massive amount of variety. From equipment to monsters to locations, and it’s all great! I still replay it every year!

10. UFO 50 No wait, this game is the most recent! Made over the course of 8 years by the creator of Spelunky and his talented friends, this game is actually 50 full sized 8-bit games! The sheer quality and variety is baffling and it’s endlessly inspiring! I could talk about it for hours!

9. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind The only game on the list I haven’t completed, but I’ve played so much of it over the last 20 years. The deep RPG mechanics, the music and atmosphere, the quests and sense of belonging in this unusual and lore rich world is awe inspiring. Play it via OpenMW!

8. Crow Country Probably the most recent game on this list, it quickly became one of my favourite horror games ever! It’s like classic RE games but even better, and the FFVII-like art style (but in full 3D) is incredible and leads to an ambiguity to the visuals that really adds to the eeriness!

7. Super Mario RPG I’ve loved the original since it released on Wii (the first time it ever released in the UK) but the remake just takes it to another level. A perfect turn based RPG with one of the best soundtracks ever made! The story is as endearing as they come, and I adore Geno and Mallow.

6. Tomba!/Tombi! One of the strangest games I’ve ever played, and I mean that in the best way! Run on all fours! Grab evil pigs and throw them into farting plants! Bite gnomes to learn their language! Mushrooms make you laugh and cry! Change your pants to go faster! It’s weird and VERY charming!

5. Metroid Prime Remastered The original was astonishing with all its little details… as a child it blew my mind and gave me such an appreciation for game development. The atmosphere was also unlike anything I’d ever seen. Must have spent hundreds of hours studying what felt like a living world!

4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D At a time in my life where we moved a lot and things were scary and ever-changing, the world in that little N64 cartridge became a place that felt like home. I truly love everything about this game and still play the randomiser weekly. It’s a classic.
