Well, ok. I got out to Montrose Beach at sunrise last week, and I didn't expect the photos to come out so eerily haunting, but it is spooky season, so who's complaining? #photography #chicago #spooky
We've got a radio tower in the left mid ground, silhouetted against a pink and gold dawn sky that fades to a pale, cloudless blue as it climbs up from the horizon. A low scrim of mist hangs just above the ground, rising from a large puddle and creeping across the frame, lightly obscuring a distant copse of trees on the right, still green from summer.

In the foreground, the early morning sun casts a reddish light on a thick patch of grass.

In the distant background, framed between the tower and the trees, the Chicago skyline looms eerily in the morning fog.A desolate beach volleyball field at dawn. Wooden posts stick up out of reddish sand like discarded swords at the scene of a bloody battle. A shroud of mist hangs in the background. In the foreground, silhouetted against a golden sky, one post juts up tall in the frame, barbed with hooks to hold a net that isn't there.A black and white photo of the same beach volleyball field. Now, the posts line up in neat rows, from our perspective, like grave markers. In monochrome, the colors of the sky blend into a single bright pale gray. The mist is more visible here, lending an eerie quality to the photo. Far off in the distance, the radio tower stands tall and alone, a dark skeletal landmark just visible through the fog.

NEW AI HUSTLE: The AI folks are now pretending that AI will give a “democratization of the creative filmmaking process to marginalized and native peoples.” My reply: Ok, no. This in NO WAY helps marginalized or remote populations tell their stories because LLMs rely on MODELS.

Autumn look. Not autumn. This is a false colour infrared shot made back in 2010 at the north end of Yoyogi Park. Heard the crows overhead. Waited about 15mins for one to fly in to my frame. And, with this, it’s goodnight. Be good. Be better than good. Be great. See you tomorrow. ❤️🙏🏻

I agree with everything other than this option. Just get rid of the "aids" altogether. I'll judge for myself whether it's slop. It's the conversational assumption that the tech knows what I want that grates as much as the judgements themselves.

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

A scientific paper already has a carefully thought out abstract & conclusions I can look at if I want an overview. A book is supposed to be a joy to read, an intellectual and emotional experience to relish. This is not something that advanced statistics can either add to or improve on.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

I got out to the lake a few mornings ago to take pictures of sailboats in the harbor, but these cheeky birds stole the show. I didn't realize at the time, but they're both red-winged blackbirds. The males and females look very different from one another. #photography #birds
A male red-winged blackbird poses for a photo. He's perched on a length of rope, back turned to the camera to better display his fancy red shoulders, break turned skyward. Very proud, most regal. In the background, we see a lush, green field of tall grasses and plants.A female red-winged blackbird stands stoically on another section of rope, strung from a light blue rusted metal post on the left side of the frame.

She is neither red-winged or black, but brown, dappled with white. Sucks that the name went to the males, but I guess that's how it goes sometimes.

She's very pretty and much less haughty about it all, in my opinion. Tall grass in the background, lots of plants I can't identify.Another male red-winged blackbird, doing the rope scene, ducking down a bit below the top of the frame. We've got some kind of grass poking up into the frame, I should really find out what it's called.

A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:
Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.

Statement on Abuse of Power of ICE and Other Federal Agents in Chicago
Black text on white background

Statement on Abuse of Power of ICE and Other Federal Agents in Chicago
On October 3, 2026 Alderwoman Jessie Fuentes (26th) witnessed ICE agents attempting to detain a patient at a clinic in her ward - a patient seeking medical care after ICE allegedly used excessive force and broke his leg. When Ald. Fuentes asked the agents for an arrest warrant - a basic constitutional requirement - they refused and instead unjustifiably put her in handcuffs.
Showing a warrant before detention is not optional; it's a cornerstone of constitutional law. And yet,
ICE agents continue to ignore this requirement.
This is not new, nor is it an isolated incident. ICE agents continue to violate civil liberties with impunity, and if we continue to allow this erosion of due process to go unchecked, we risk undermining the foundation of our democracy.
Due process is not negotiable. We will not stay silent. We must stand together to demand accountability. What's playing out day-by-day is a warning that we must organize and not relent.
Speak out and show up. Go to ICE watch trainings. Learn your rights so you can protect the rights of those around you.
And we, as members of the City Council hold firm that it will take a coalition all of us, united across racial and ethnic communities, political leanings, ages and socioeconomic status, to stand up to the disturbing pattern of abuse from ICE and the federal government, and the complete disregard for the rights we hold as Americans.List of elected officials
