Some heavy rain is expected for some of us overnight and early on Wednesday 🌧️ Especially in the west. But the areas which need the rain most, will again not see as much.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

So many good points in this post by @nsaphra.bsky.social: only quoting a couple, to encourage you to read the others. "My colleagues and students adopt the writing quirks they read throughout the day, and their own writing becomes more like an LLM’s." nsaphra.net/post/uncanny/
To find a nugget of meaning, the user must sift through mounds of slop—and some simply won’t bother. They’ll serve the slop unfiltered to another party, who performs this interpretive labor themselves, only to discover that the underlying meaning does not exist. When someone expects me to perform their share of this interpretive labor, I get angry. Grice’s rules are, in essence, rules of etiquette—their unwarranted violation is rude.

Oof I felt this one. I was not familiar with Paul Grice's cooperative principle, "the speaker is conveying some intent as well as they can". i.e. we used to count on there being some intent behind fluent language. What if we no longer can? Another level of norms collapse beyond social media?

It seems relevant that the thing Isaiah is being sent to do in that passage is to deliver a prophecy of doom to his own people for having fallen away from the path of righteousness. So if these guys were like, Isaiah, that would be robustly bad news for...the United States.

As usual, it's either “we need this to protect you against the dangerous terrorists” or “will someone please think of the children?”. (This cartoon is at least 20 years old, by the way. Some things just don't change. People fall for it every time.)

After thinking about this question all weekend, I think my favorite candidate is the alchemical symbol for air: 🜁 It’s connotes both atmosphere and “transfer”. It’s a standard Unicode character. It references a capital “A.” And it’s very simple, which feels appropriate for a protocol, like 🌐 or 🛜.

This image is obviously wrong (highest drag should be right in front, not across the top) And obviously AI Which I found disappointing Because instead of just asking ChatGPT or Gemini to make a (wrong) fake picture You can just ask Codex or CC to rig you up an actual aerodynamics sim
Aerodynamics sim of a guinea pig, but unfortunately butt-first (high drag)Proper aerodynamics sim of a guinea pig, correctly showing that the nose area is high drag, the face area medium drag, and generally aerodynamic thereafter. Unfortunately, the space directly behind the guinea pig is a dead-air zone, making it look like animal is propelled by fart rainbows

Mount St. Helens erupted 46 years ago this week — removing over 1,000 feet from the volcano’s summit. More here: creators.yahoo.com/lifestyle/st... I made these maps with a relatively new (2024) elevation model from the USGS: www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item... 🌋🗺️📊
These maps show the summit of Mount St. Helens before and after the eruption of May 18, 1980. The eruption lowered the summit from 9,677 feet to 8,365 feet and created a vast crater. The top map shows the near-perfect conical shape of the volcano before the eruption. The bottom map shows the large crater and the lava domes that grew inside in subsequent eruptive episodes.

A two-panel math meme comparing a function and its inverse using the "This is Fine" dog.

Top panel: On the left, the text reads "f(x)". On the right, the original "This is Fine" comic shows a dog sitting at a table with a mug while the room is engulfed in flames. The dog says, "This is fine."

Bottom panel: On the left, the text reads "f to the power of negative 1 of x", representing the inverse function. On the right, the roles are reversed: a character made of fire sits at the table saying "This is fine," while the room is filled with many small dogs instead of flames.
