Abdul El-Sayed had an event in my town today, and the line ended up stretching the entire way around a city block and met itself again like when you would lose a game of Snake

The one-legged 3-pointer would be a genuinely insane weapon for a player who masters it.

I slept on it and decided that one preseason game is enough, I’m ready to be an wildly optimistic Chris Cenac Guy.

I thought "Tucker DeVries is the most Iowa ass name I've ever heard, I wonder where he's from" and then I looked it up and he was in fact Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2021.

I don't think Cenac is going to play in Boston much, but the ceiling is SO high, good heavens

I never thought I’d find a TV character I enjoy as much as Eleanor Shellstrop, and I haven’t, but Jackson Lamb is a very close second.

A hot take I genuinely believe is that the 1v1 hoops circuit is the most slept-on sports internet entity and it has massive potential/staying power.

This was the most difficult, and most important thing I've ever written. This is the obituary for my father, Joe. I hope it captures his true essence. www.trippfuneralhome.com/obituaries/j...

Can’t wait to see what an AI company plans to do for its “new digital content series about building and playing in Boston”

When I see people claim that AI is “getting there” on journalism and art, it makes me far less likely to believe that AI is “getting there“ in medical fields.

I believe that this guy is not doing galaxy-brained marketing because I also believe that people who spend too much time using LLMs are giving themselves Computer CTE.

I often think about the character Death in "The Sandman" and how whenever she collects someone, they always ask for just a little longer - to apologize, to say goodbye, etc. - and they can't have it, and I often think about how that would feel at the wheel of a car. Anyway, this shouldn't exist.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, but you also miss like 60-70% of the shots you do take, which is why the volume shooters have it right.

Notably, the Trump administration just canceled NOAA's annual Arctic Report Card, which offers a really in-depth and scientific look at the health of the Arctic. Last year's is, predictably, pretty grim reading. arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/...

I am, once again, not allowed to voice any opinions publicly, but I will say my wife has worked very hard canvassing for a candidate over the last few weeks here in Michigan and I am very proud and supportive of her efforts, so today is a very big day.

It's certainly possible that the Sixers win 60+ games and cruise to the title, but I personally will believe in a somewhat incoherent super team with tons of ball handlers when I see it.

My VAR take is that it, like every other form of replay in every other sport, is going nowhere because of sports gambling.

You might be on to something, because there also seems to be a subtlety to being truly brilliant at soccer, and Americans aren't exactly known for being subtle

See I think I’m starting to see some of those things at the younger levels, but I also 100% am not a technical director, and I’ve only been watching for a few years lol

What are our youth coaches missing? I agree with you in sort of a vague way because I can see it, but I don’t think I have the words/knowledge base myself to identify it

Tom Westerholm @tomwesterholm.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
And to be clear, I’m NOT saying the 9-year-olds I’m watching are future pros, just that their quality suggests there might be an upward trend happening.

Tom Westerholm @tomwesterholm.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
One thing I will say is that the US youth soccer system is certainly flawed, but I am interested to see where we’re at in like 15 years, because there are some very, very good 9-year-olds out there at some of these clubs.

I disagree very strongly that 95% of sports ability is genetic. I'm also not advocating for specialization, but it's pretty well established that if you want to be a high-level soccer player, you need to develop ball fluency at a younger age than other sports.

Tom Westerholm @tomwesterholm.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
NBA players generally self-select because of height (the Thompson twins are 6'7 - Dan Burns is perhaps the tallest non-keeper in Premier League history at 6'7). But the bigger issue is some of these elite athletes would have to choose the sport extremely early to develop the requisite ball mastery.

Tom Westerholm @tomwesterholm.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Not to be overly downer, but I’m hesitant to overstate the accomplishments of the USMNT when their wins were Australia, Paraguay and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their losses were Turkiye (already out) and Belgium (4-1, outclassed).
