Software design should be easy and neat, with no needless boundaries to meet. But when changes get tough, settle for “good enough”! Ship it Friday, rinse and repeat.

A developer pushed to main, with no desire to explain, keep up with his pace, 'cause reviews are a waste, he might break production again.

A NullPointerException was thrown from a piece of code that removed minutes from Instant variables... to use in a query for comparison. The database does that comparison equally well on the original value and now we have a bug 😔

It's so easy to write unreliable tests with Mockito. No guard against refactoring and describing situations that could never occur due to validation guards... only useful to increase code coverage

"This graph clearly indicates that software is cheaper to make, Jason" It indicates that software nobody wants is cheaper to make. Yet again, we forget there's a speed limit on the feedback loop that really matters.

People who start their message with a binary statement are missing knowledge, experience, or empathy. The world isn’t black or white, certainly not the tech world!

also, god, LLMs feel like kerosene for ADHD. something about the implicit push to multitask, or reams of text being generated faster than anyone can read. it’s not a calm feeling

Implementing a feature in under 2h because BDD tests are easy to write 🥳 Vs. Being afraid to refactor a class because mocks are unreliable 😭

Generative AI is a slop generation machine by default. You have to put in a lot of work to get something of quality from it.

The #Github setup-java action has a poor caching mechanism but I really like the way #Hibernate solves it with a daily cache created from the day before

Having multiple copies of your data, specifically laid out for different access patterns, is completely fine. Desirable even. Just make sure to have one canonical source of truth and drive updates to all the copies from there.

I have to admit that when the tutorials and blog post don't cover your problem, solutions proposed by AI often contain good elements. Don't just copy the suggested code though

The positive thing about AI tooling going mainstream and setting expectations high (e.g. "anyone can build software with AI") is that a large group will learn what us devs know already: Creating good software is hard and it's hard to explain to outsiders in a way they understand

I've seen the 4th best Naked Gun movie. I've watched the old films 20-30 times, listened to The Lonely Island on repeat and ... read about Pamela Anderson and I had high expectations. Pam scatting Kid Rock lyrics was funny though

It's good to reinvent the wheel sometimes! endler.dev/2025/reinven... Great post by Matthias Endler. It helps understanding how wheels work, how you can fix them when broken, how to make better wheels if really needed, or how to find creative use cases for wheels by thinking outside the box.

@simonbrown.je how does one determine the line for external dependencies? Is an API Manager external when it has a dedicated service for a System? I suppose it's close to pub/sub where you advise against a message bus container

#Spring and #Lombok, both easy to use. They extend your code by the annotations you choose. But once they are paired, you forget why they're there. And it's ever so hard to cut loose.
