I track #ridehail data about from Chicago and Toronto. In Chicago, the "additional charges" on trips have increased to $10 per trip on average (!). Any ideas why? Chicago introduced a $1.50 congestion fee in Jan 2026 but that's not enough to explain the changes. tomslee.net/ridehail-tor...

Deadheading vehicles add to congestion. In downtown areas we estimate that one in five vehicles may now be a ridehail vehicle, and half of those will be without a passenger. Ridehail vehicles added well over a billion "vehicle kilometres travelled" to Toronto streets in 2025.

The Toronto #OpenData covers 450 million trips and is the first to include "P1 time" or time drivers are on the app without a trip. It shows that drivers spent half their time driving without a passenger (deadheading) - that's time drivers are not being paid and adding to congestion.
