This is a truly funny day in politics - Eric Schmitt confused NBA Hawks with NCAA Hawkeyes - In a politically consequential way! - And Amy Klobuchar is ball-knower, just roasting him - And we get to watch Katie Britt make this face Season 6 is the craziest Trump season yet

I have never identified more with a politician than I do with the sheer joy on this face, joy that can only come from calmly destroying the argument of stupid rival who walked right into it

For what it's worth, in the common law tradition, fraud can also be attributed to "negligent misrepresentation." That applies here very cleanly, in my view, ankd would encompass what you consider "grossly negligent" www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fraud

It might be useful, in the context of false citations, to consider legal definitions of fraud explicitly (at least, Anglo-American ones). If we define fraud as "negligent misrepresentation," then false citations to things that do not exist clearly are fraud www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fraud

I hope Cornell continues to be a leader in higher education, and that the ideas and principles embodied in these documents help everyone in higher education to remember the purpose and mission of our profession.

I am especially pleased by the emphasis on judgment: - "Judgment is the skill that learning produces." - "At its best, the university is an integrated ecosystem for learning whose goal, in its broadest sense, is the cultivation of sound judgment." I could not possibly agree more.

Cornell has released a major statement on higher education entitled "The Future of the American University" I am proud of this report. I had nothing to do with its drafting, and don't agree with every recommendation, but it is thoughtful, thorough, and wise provost.cornell.edu/_files/initi...

The University of Ghent has Code of Ethics, which you can find here. Two of its components (screenshots below) seem to be fully decisive to me. You can complain that this is a bad Code of Ethics, but the plain text is clear as day. www.ugent.be/en/ghentuniv...
Everyone at Ghent University is expected to be familiar with and comply with all applicable
laws and regulations, policies and ethical values and norms that guide our work. Everyone at
Ghent University is individually responsible for their own actions and everyone at Ghent
University is collectively responsible for maintaining the ethical standards and complying with
all applicable laws, regulations and policies.
If the actions of the institution or everyone at Ghent University are not regulated by the Code
or by specific laws, regulations or policies, the values laid down in the Code will always
determine our actions.
No act that lacks integrity – an act that is contrary to the standards set out in the Code – will
be tolerated, even if the act is common within or outside Ghent University, or if some of the
objectives it achieves are dignified or honourable. The appearance of unethical behaviour can
also be harmful to the people of Ghent University, the institution and its activities.Everyone at Ghent University has the fundamental right to speak and in some cases, a duty
to speak and a duty of confidentiality.
Ghent University cherishes and defends the right to freedom of expression. Everyone at Ghent
University has the freedom to express their personal opinions. You speak in your own name
and make this clear as such. You take personal responsibility for what you say.
Official statements and positions that are related to Ghent University's policy may only be
shared by employees who are explicitly designated to do so.
Freedom of expression is not unlimited:
- You do not incite discrimination, hatred, violence or segregation against others;
- You do not spread ideas about racial superiority or hatred;
- You do not join groups or associations that promote discrimination or segregation;
- You abstain from any form of negationism

I am utterly convinced that the best use of AI for social science research is old fashioned prompting to find and extract online data from APIs. Explain what you want, explain that you want it all done in R or Python with a script you can run locally for full replicability, and presto.

Jacob, I read this and found myself nodding in agreement. Here is a question: what is the body that determines what the relevant norms of scholarly inquiry are? Would it not follow that some body of scholars could decide that, say, race science is outside the norms of scholarly inquiry?

New course syllabus just dropped: Asian Political Economy, an advanced seminar on East and Southeast Asia. tompepinsky.com/wp-content/u...
This seminar is an advanced introduction to the political economy of East and Southeast Asia.
Our central objective is to understand the political underpinnings of economic performance
across countries and over time. Along the way, we will address issues such as the role of the state
in economic development, corruption and rent-seeking, labor activism and repression,
democracy, institutions, and the politics of economic reform.

what's a little real talk among druz'ya?
I have a different interpretation of what a realist should conclude about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its antecedents. I start from a different premise: Russia is not a great power. It is obviously a declining power, objectively so. Its only claims to global power status are its petroleum reserves, its nuclear arsenal, and our collective memories of the Cold War. Take those away, and Russia is no more a great power than Turkey was in 1935.
The Soviet Union lost the Cold War decisively. Its empire fell into pieces, its regional alliance disappeared, and most of its former allies joined NATO. Russia lost, and the Western alliance won. Given this, it is not NATO’s responsibility to protect Russian state security interests. It is Russia’s responsibility to give wide berth to NATO,

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.
