An ongoing theme of this season has been weighing the gains and losses - cognitively, environmentally, pedagogically, ontologically - of AI. The conversations have reminded us of the importance of nuance and that we are still in the deciding phases of what this means for humanity.

Comment from the audience - model disclosure of AI including saying none used. If you are hesitant to disclose use, that bit of friction should prompt a reflection on why. Good conversation opportunities with that as well.

Tom Pantazes @tompantazes.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
@karencosta.bsky.social moving discussion away from highly prescriptive discussions (not performing as well) to these more open discussions: What did you know about X before this week? What did you want to know about X? What did you learn about X? What reading (our text) stood out to you and why?
100
Tom Pantazes @tompantazes.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
@karencosta.bsky.social third tip is related to Friction. The struggle that helps us learn. AI is the anti to this. Karen trusts her students but does not expect purity. Karen is contemplating requiring Google Doc history next semester to add just enough friction.

Tom Pantazes @tompantazes.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
@karencosta.bsky.social asks us to check on our own awesomely named consume:create:chill ratio to make sure those things stay in balance. Karen also does a daily morning pages routine where she free writes three pages each morning (with the first two being grumbles) along with touching grass.
000
Tom Pantazes @tompantazes.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
@karencosta.bsky.social also reminds us to be intentional of noticing the good student work too. The ones genuinely engaging in the course. Not just the ones that frustrate.
000
Tom Pantazes @tompantazes.bsky.social · 13/11/2025
@karencosta.bsky.social approach to handling AI: 1. organize your AI strategy - keep key resources in one place for easy access (Karen uses a Notion page) in order to respond to AI issues with students. This includes outreach language, and language to respond to student submissions.
