The concept of elite welfare invites researchers & analysts to look ‘upwards’ & consider how the public money & policy-created advantages flow to the most economically privileged in society.

There’s been extensive political debate about whether we can afford to provide state support to those e.g. out of work, facing long term health problems, or struggling to make ends meet. Our article turns that debate on its head.

This is the late phase of the project “burning everything to the ground to protect the Thatcherite consensus and the people and organisations that impose it”. There’s a fair bit left to burn yet, and everything I’ve seen suggests we will gladly set all that on fire also.

Yeah. But I wanted an interactive graph where every data point would show the donor and donee.

There isn't one. I just spread the data points horizontally.

There is a fundamental choice facing the BBC & the political class to which it currently answers: democratises or die. Pre-order our new book, ‘The BBC: From Corporation to Cooperative’, from @orbooks.bsky.social here: orbooks.com/catalog/the-...

This is a major breakthrough. The Greens are the only political party to have addressed head on fundamental problems with the BBC's politicised governance model. Most policy discussion amounts to tinkering round the edges, debating funding mechanisms & charter renewal periods.

I like the way she’s willing to believe in endless multi-tentacled globe-spanning conspiracies, but “Labour are corrupt and they work for millionaires, against the public interest” immediately explodes her brain.

I'm still reeling from the @tom_watson / Palantir news. But I also think it will blow up in both their faces. It's so transparently desperate.
@andyburnham is going to have to respond to people's disgust & anger at Palantir's role in the

So even with the control they exercise over algorithmic media there's a great chasm now between popular & elite culture, & repressive measures create these political-cultural flashpoints.

Tom Mills @tommills.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
That's one way of reading what's happening now. The political-economic system & its media aren't capable of reflecting the interests of broad publics. Somethings got to give.

When I first researched the Israel lobby over a decade ago I argued they had largely given up on the 'battle of ideas' in the conventional sense & were focused on shoring up elite opinion.

We can nutshell this one: the Conservative Party fucked everyone in Britain. It should’ve destroyed them as a party, but it didn’t: it wrecked all of us instead and they got away with it because Britain has no meaningful systems of accountability that apply to our ruling class.
