Inclusive science brings the best talent to ecology and sustainability
Environmental crises are too complex and urgent to be addressed by a narrow segment of humanity. Ecology and sustainability sciences therefore require institutions that identify, recruit, support, and...

Scenario modelling of nickel supply to meet demand to 2050 identifies extensive overlap between land and coastal mines and high-priority areas for terrestrial and marine conservation, and shows how this tension would increase under a moratorium on deep-sea mining 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

As our economic super-organism's appetite for minerals grows, mining the seafloor, an idea from the mid 20th Century, begins to take shape. In this in-depth-review, Adrian Glover and colleagues review the potential impacts of mining on the deep-sea environment. www.cell.com/current-biol...

Hidden biodiversity costs of a deep-sea mining moratorium - Nature Ecology & Evolution

Several more highly consequential tradeoffs have also yet to be modelled, and given the time sensitivity of the outcomes from such questions, I personally hope much more resources are directed toward wholistic, strategic planning for an ecologically responsible energy transition, and soon. 7/n

As this demand is inextricably linked to humanity’s efforts to avoid catastrophic consequences of climate change, the impacts to marine ecosystems from a moratorium on marine biodiversity via this threat pathway have yet to be modelled. 6/n

So, perhaps a moratorium on polymetallic nodule mining is misguided? Yet, it’s just one form of deep-sea mining. Minor changes in definitions could be made now to protect cobalt crusts, hydrothermal vents, and their extremophile biotic communities from exploitation, while meeting nickel demand. 5/n

Nickel laterites are evidently associated with areas of key importance for biodiversity, on land and in sea. Could deep-sea polymetallic nodules be harvested instead to avoid impacting these areas? The models suggest so, and through extracting just 15% of nickel est. to be contained in the CCZ. 4/n

Further, up to 60% of nickel may be sourced from mines <50km from coastal waters which rank in the top 10% of global priority areas for conserving marine biodiversity (primarily in the Coral Triangle of Indonesia and the Philippines). 3/n

Examining future nickel supply scenarios to resource a renewable energy transition, we find that ~50% of future supply would likely come from deposits in areas in the top 10% of biodiversity and carbon priorities for terrestrial and near-shore marine ecosystems if a blanket moratorium remains. 2/n

Might a moratorium on all forms of deep-sea mining be more harmful for biodiversity? Out now in @natecoevo.nature.com, led by Dr Jayden Hyman, we explore the ecological tradeoffs associated with nickel supply for priority conservation areas across land and sea. 🪸🌳🌐 1/n
