Rally driving is the clear case where it does make sense, and there you have two big differences. First, you have vastly more power than grip. Second, you get more lateral grip when sliding by using the sides of the wheel against the dirt and mud - that's the opposite of the effect on hard surfaces.

What else would you write it in? :-) Seriously - assembly isn't that difficult, and most of us learned to write in it because there really wasn't much alternative. There was a FORTH compiler (White Lightning). I don't remember there being a C compiler?

Microsoft compiler used to do things like converting a simple select into perversions like this: float t = (x > 0.0f) ? 1.0f : 0.0f; float res = t * (a-b) + b; Argh! Stop it! GPUs all have conditional moves! Leave it as an "if"!

My usual advice is please please please don't unroll your loops or flatten your ifs in the source code. Give that info to the final IHV's compiler - it can always do the unroll/flatten for you, and usually better than you can. What it CAN'T do is re-roll an unrolled loop. But in this case...

It is slightly curious their unroll heuristics didn't work. Usually they do something like count the instructions in the loop and if it's below a certain number they unroll. But in this case if you do the unroll you don't need the indexing, so the number of instructions actually SHRINKS!

I see this in coworkers as well. They're trying to get the words out so fast they're tripping over themselves, skipping words, mangling them - it's quite hard to understand. I call it "2x" symptom because that's what speed they listen to podcasts on.
