Pretty sure I was also at that event... my memory is of OA being decried as the death knell of scholarship, and scholarly societies in particular.

I suspect that if this were to happen, it wouldn't happen in the short or medium term. Other services which have not yet been restored that may take priority. It may also not be within the future scope of the BL to host digital copies, perhaps because of storage cost or risk considerations.

There is so much extraordinary work in PhD/DPhil theses that this possible loss is horrid to consider. However, I'm no longer working at a UK institution and have had no heart to pester my former BL/EThOS contacts to find out. 6/6

Particularly a fear for a situation where the awarding institution chose not to keep local digital copies AND did not require a physical copy to be given to the uni library. Such a situation could mean that a thesis has been lost forever. 5/6

Sarah Brundrett @tomesandtech.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
It is in relation to the digital theses in that last group that gives me "the fear", the digital copies of theses where EThOS may have held the *only* digital copy. The cyberattack took out, as I understand it, some BL backups as well as the "main" copies. The full-text theses may be gone. 4/6

Sarah Brundrett @tomesandtech.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Other institutions provided both metadata and the full-text, either because they weren't fussed about the downloads, or because the BL retaining a copy was good for #digipres or because they did not have an IR / didn't include theses in their IR. 3/6

Sarah Brundrett @tomesandtech.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Some institutions chose to drive download traffic to their institutional repository (IR) and only provided metadata and no full-text. (I don't remember if the institutions had to supply the IR URL or EThOS staff had to search and add it to the record.) 2/6

Sarah Brundrett @tomesandtech.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
To be fair, the (previous) MOUs with institutions regarding metadata and full-text were varied. Institutions, if I remember correctly, had the option to give EThOS metadata only, or metadata and full-text. 1/6

A colleague's private response to the query made me laugh. "...nah. We just packed up the books and our cardigans and our teapots and our pearls and moved to some new locations." I remain very, very proud of how much we achieved and continue to achieve in supporting the new university.

The perception/promotion of our work and academic role remains challenging. An electrician attending one of our campus workrooms earlier today asked me on the way out if "the merger affected you at all?" I smiled & gave my standard reply "Oh yes, we delivered five years work in a year and half."

I stopped by the Weston yesterday to see the Clarendon muses- they’ve been on top the building for three hundred years, came down two years ago for restoration, and go back up in September! So if you’re looking for a free exhibit in an air conditioned building, go check it out, they’re really neat
