The agreement to release €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility for Ukraine is excellent news. It means more support, from training to equipment. It complements what we are doing through our Ukraine support packages – for the state and for defence. More is coming from our side. Very soon.

Vor allem wegen der protektionistischen Wirtschaftspolitik der USA unter Präsident Donald Trump verstehen beide Seiten die Einigung als Meilenstein für offene Märkte und engere Zusammenarbeit.

Mexiko will nahezu alle Zölle auf EU-Importe schrittweise abschaffen, Handelsbarrieren verringern und europäischen Unternehmen den Zugang zu öffentlichen Aufträgen erleichtern. Darüber hinaus regelt das Abkommen digitalen Handel, Investitionen und weitere Formen der wirtschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit. Die Europäische Union plant Investitionen von rund fünf Milliarden Euro in die Infrastruktur Mexikos. Mit einem gemeinsamen Markt von insgesamt rund 580 Millionen Menschen ist die Partnerschaft von erheblicher geopolitischer Bedeutung. Bereits heute liegt das Handelsvolumen zwischen der EU und Mexiko bei rund 86 Milliarden Euro.

Als zweitgrößte Volkswirtschaft Lateinamerikas und mit rund 130 Millionen Einwohnern ist Mexiko für Europa ein wichtiger strategischer Partner. Die geografische Nähe zu den USA und der erleichterte Zugang zum US-Markt machen Mexiko zu einem attraktiven Produktions- und Exportstandort. Für europäische Unternehmen bietet das Abkommen die Möglichkeit, Lieferketten breiter aufzustellen, mehr Planungssicherheit zu schaffen und Abhängigkeiten von einzelnen Märkten zu reduzieren.

Neben wirtschaftlichen Fragen enthält das Freihandelsabkommen auch Regelungen zu Klimaschutz, Menschenrechten und globaler Kooperation. Gleichzeitig schützt das Abkommen zahlreiche europäische Lebensmittel und Getränke mit geografischer Herkunftsangabe vor Nachahmungen, darunter Parmaschinken, Bayerisches Bier und Tiroler Speck. Außerdem soll es Europa den Zugang zu wichtigen Rohstoffen wie Lithium und Kupfer erleichtern.

Mehr als 70 NGOs werfen den Vertragsparteien vor, insbesondere die Interessen großer Konzerne zu stärken, während Umwelt-, Sozial- und Menschenrechtsstandards nicht ausreichend geschützt würden.
