Two show creators ground up, bored, over it and everyone's paragraphs about it. The road they took could have been fleshed out in a great big prestige arc of hubris and power in the grip of fear. They threw it all down the stairs and fucked off to a week-long bender in a cabin while it aired.

I often enjoy clumsy failures bc they're real attempts to pull it up, or get at something; maybe trying to transcend the underlying mess with a bizarre moonshot that had no hope of landing, or perhaps a left turn that felt brave but just didn't work. The GoT finale had it in the bag, though.

I don't know how much I can really talk considering I am a Mass Effect 3 ending and BSG reboot defender, but my nominal interest in Game of Thrones was still blown away by the sumptuous awfulness its final stretch. A seismic collapse that reconfigured everyone's trust of "prestige" TV.

What makes this fun to me personally, is that I like seeing any kind of interiority from the athlete world, who fans treat like personal amiibos who aren't winning hard enough if they have other passions. So a decade+ project makes people mad in ways that those same hours watching TV wouldn't.

Tomlin took home one of only 6 Super Bowl wins in all of Steelers history, but folks did the math after Tomlin said this took him 12 years, and realized that the yearly post-season disasters that shut them out of the playoffs early are timed exactly to when he started Minecraft. Mike Tomlin Minecrafting is so fascinating to me. If you don't know, he's one of the great Pittsburgh Steelers Coaches who took them to two Super Bowls, with one win, and notched up 19 years of winning seasons overall.
