I'm not happy about the state of leadership in Rails (to put it mildly) but I like this perspective.
reddit comment: I’m a transwoman. There’s a strong possibility that DHH doesn’t think that I have the right to exist the way I do in my daily life. The way he talks about other marginalized groups is even worse. It sucks, more so because I love Ruby and I love Rails.

Despite this, I don’t think the SWAN is cooked. I can still be nice and write code that makes me happy. And DHH can’t stop me from doing those things with Ruby or Rails no matter how much of an asshole he is. He might own the trademark, but the source is MIT. He can go pound sand.

This might be a naive take, but I refuse to let shitty people take the enjoyment out of the things I like.

Substack writers, you need a website!

DRY (don't repeat yourself) is actually a bad idea in many situations. For example, in a service (or microservice) architecture where you want independent deployability, two services sharing a library are effectively coupled not only to the library but also to each other. 1/3

i'd position it as substack alternative with own-your-domain as feature (if you own domain, you own the url and are not vendor-locked)

I mentioned it to build an analogy to runtime branching and allowing two (or more) variants of same component to be in the app, routed/decided at runtime from feature flag or env var. To quickly swap behaviors between new and legacy.

Because I'm a cheapskate and don't code after-hours as much as I want to, also I want to keep the manual-coding skill sharp, I only pay for Cursor and not Claude Code (which I use a lot at work). And I'm happy to report that cursor-cli is not that far behind!

Testament just released their new album, Para Bellum. Way better than Brotherhood Of The Snake and Titans Of Creation, as they've toned down the black metal experiments (not fully though) and we're back to Bay Area thrash. It might replace Dark Roots as my second favourite!

Can we, for a second, appreciate the Director of Engineering who flat out refused to produce falsified data for the founder, telling her that he doesn't think it's legal, refusing further pressuring to do so. So Javice had to contract externally to get the fraud done.

My weakly-held opinion on DHH's political ramblings: as far as my political views are from his, freedom of speech means he can express non-extremist views, including right-wing ones. Open-source, like workplace, has and will have people from different parts of political spectrum.

Diverse cities where strangers from different backgrounds respect, welcome, and care for each other are literally the most amazing thing to ever come out of civilization. It's why I loved living in NYC so much, and why I want to move to London once our nest is empty.
