I'm reminded of the "Timely Rings" in FF16 which are presented as a sort of accessibility feature. You can equip these rings to make combat easier, but you're simultaneously sacrificing ring slots that more experienced players would use to for other valuable abilities. www.ign.com/wikis/final-...

I really like @gameonysus.bsky.social's perspective in this episode on the subjectivity of game difficulty (starting around the 1:18:00 mark). You can implement systems that give the player balancing options but even those will be subjective. www.iheart.com/podcast/1300...

more flexibility in how they use and extend the engine. Later on when foundation has more resources, or priorities have shifted, the core project could merge some of these forks or individual changes back in. Just a thought! Either way, I appreciate the dialogue. Another awesome thing about Godot!

Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
That's what I'm trying to get at. If modules were factored out it would be easier to see where the foundation is lacking resources, and other devs could choose to fork those modules for external development. These forks may not be up to the standards of the core project but it would give devs

I wonder how many devs even bother handling an unlikely case like that! Your implementation is probably better than you think. 😆
110
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
Ah yeah, that makes sense!
010
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
That's awesome! I'm sure it's easier than some of the other stuff you've done (like dynamic audio processing). 😛

Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
Ok yeah, I was just thinking that too. Hourly validation is still useful for the periods the user is not actively interacting with Twitch.
010
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
The doc mentions that Twitch conducts periodic audits to ensure devs are implementing validation correctly, which again seems to imply that there's a gap in their API and they really need everyone to do this hourly validation.
110
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
The requirement for hourly token validation seems to imply that there's some kind of gap in their API's authentication checks otherwise. That seems a bit strange, but not impossible.
110
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
np! I hope I'm not way off base. 🙂 What I'm wondering is what happens when you make an API call with a token that has expired or been revoked. Would it still succeed? Or would it fail with a 401 error (or similar)?
120
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
I'm definitely reading between the lines a bit but I think they would've mentioned these things if they were required.
120
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
My read on this is that no, you don't need to revoke the token. The direction of communication here seems to be Twitch --> Game. I assume you're good to save the token for reuse on future sessions.
120
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
If the game is relaunched it must validate the token again and, at that point, it will pick up any updates that happened between game sessions. So basically, from what I can tell, all you need to do is make sure you're validating the token every hour when the game is running.
130
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 23/08/2026
Based on the docs the reason they ask you validate the token every hour is so the game can terminate Twitch integration if the token is revoked elsewhere (by the user or by Twitch themselves). If the game is not running there's nothing to do.

Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 22/08/2026
Nice! Maybe that was less of a naive question and more of an ignorant one. 😅 The next question is have you considered factoring out those modules to separate GitHub repos? That way different communities can develop around each module. Might help make dev processes more manageable.

If they really do scrap BPs we might see some third parties rush in to fill the void with plugins. But Epic might still backtrack... I can't see this going well for them with their current roadmap.
010
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 21/08/2026
This may be a naive question but would it be possible to modularize the various systems in the engine (like rendering, networking, source control, specific editor tools, etc.) to allow external teams to help more easily in some of these areas?

Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 21/08/2026
You can really feel the technical debt! 👌
090
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 21/08/2026
When I hear that nearly everything in a game like Expedition 33 was implemented in BPs my head explodes. That sounds like an absolute nightmare to work on. And yet, it clearly worked for them.
010
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 21/08/2026
I agree with you from a personal perspective but I hesitate to call it a failed concept because it really HAS clicked for a lot of people. However, I do think there are ways to improve BPs that would benefit everyone (both people who love it and hate it). It's a shame Epic is scrapping it instead.

Great brief overview! My ears perked up when you mentioned coroutines (I love them!). I also love that scene files are human readable. The ability to do project-wide text searches is super valuable. (Thanks, I appreciate it! I didn't realize you were ex-Ubi as well. 😄)

The puppet episode of Strange New Worlds was actually really fun! It tells an existential story in a way that somehow still feels like #startrek, even if it's very silly. I especially liked Pelia's wiggly hair! I still wish SNW was the return-to-form they originally pitched but what can you do.
Frame from the episode showing puppet Pelia standing on a glossy black floor. She's wearing a puppet-sized version of her red uniform and her curly blond hair is wildly poofy, sticking it out in all directions.

Nice! I don't know if I'm prepared to give up C#, but yeah. 😄 Both Unity and Unreal are solid engines (my Blueprint gripes aside) but the companies behind them seem untrustworthy. On the other hand Godot seems be maturing really quickly and has the benefit of being open source.

Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 20/08/2026
I haven't used Construct but what you described is pretty much what I'd hope to see. Someone also pointed out that you can already copy/paste Blueprint snippets as JSON (e.g. to a text editor) so they're halfway there!
000
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 20/08/2026
Personally, for my own projects, I don't see myself moving to Unreal anytime soon. I think I'll be looking at Godot.
100
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 20/08/2026
I know there's been discussion about UE6 removing Blueprints. This is not meant as an argument in favour of that. What I would've liked is for Epic to improve the implementation of Blueprints to support more external workflows like merging (i.e. move to a text-based data format).
100
Tom Voros @tom.voros.ca · 20/08/2026
I've been learning Unreal for almost a year and I feel like Blueprints are crushing me. I get that they're extremely valuable to a lot of devs but there are so many points of frustration. Most of them stem from the binary format and inability to diff/merge changes. Goes against my entire workflow. 😩
