Telegraph: "But after a night of carnage in Kyiv caused by the slowdown, Musk was alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe." The banality of evil, 2026 edition.
Tweet by Telegraph journaist Joe Barnes: "EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk came to Donald Trump with the plan to throttle Ukraine’s use of SpaceX’s Starshield satellite internet network, sources have told the Telegraph.

The tech billionaire made the proposal during the US President’s row with Volodymyr Zelensky over strikes on Russian oil refineries.

‘The reality is that they were both in it,’ a senior source said of Musk’s and Trump’s involvement.

But after a night of carnage in Kyiv caused by the slowdown, Musk was alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe.

The SpaceX boss then proceeded to tweet, blaming the US administration, and ultimately, President Trump for authorising the slowdown.

5/ Spofforth was supported in this by Toby Young's "Free Speech Union". Isabel Oakeshott said she was "the victim of a witch hunt". A witch hunt involves conspiracy theorists spreading lies that stir up fear & hatred. Which is exactly what Spofforth & Armstrong were doing.

4/ Spofforth, incidentally, went on to spread more dangerously inflammatory lies on X after the Southport murders, alleging that the perpetrator was a Muslim asylum seeker. She was arrested but not prosecuted due to "insufficient evidence". And then posed as a "free speech" martyr.

In light of recent developments on Ukraine, hard not to be reminded of David Low's famous cartoon from June 1940. The US was then still following a policy of "neutrality" on Nazi aggression, but at least Roosevelt was not actively conniving with Hitler.
David Low cartoon: British soldier stands on the shore, gesturing defiantly to German bombers in the dark sky overhead. Caption: "Very Well. Alone."

I had this exchange with Arron Banks' sidekick Andy Wigmore in August 2017. Wigmore was comms director for LeaveEU. He & Banks went on to lie to a parliamentary committee & successive PMs (until now) found it convenient to cover up the truth about Russia's involvement in Brexit.

FT: Trump calling round European capitals threatening to stop all arms for Ukraine unless he gets his phoney "temporary ceasefire" so Putin can give him a hand in the midterms. Absolutely depraved.

1/ Albert Einstein sometimes described himself as a Zionist & wanted Palestine to be a safe haven for Jews. But he abhorred ethno-nationalist Zionism & foresaw its destructive consequences. This is the now dominant form of Zionism that the Green Party motion refers to but it is is not the only...
For Netanyahu, the presupposition is that Israel must stand as a Jewish state, something that Einstein did not approve of. Yes, Einstein was a self-proclaimed Zionist, but as with so much else, Einstein’s view was non-standard. Einstein thought that Palestine should be a multi-cultural nation which could serve as a safe space for Jews in danger to flee and in which there would be Jewish institutions, especially Hebrew University, which he saw as a potential beacon of pride for Jews around the world if it could be made into a world-class research university. But the idea of an exclusively Jewish state worried Einstein because it would take Judaism and marry it to nationalism, something that could rot Judaism from the inside.

As a child in turn of the century Germany, Einstein had developed a loathing of nationalism and the jingoistic militarism it bred. The heart of Judaism as Einstein saw it was an appreciation of the other as a full human being. Jews since the Diaspora were always minorities and this meant that Jews had acquired a sense of what it meant to be marginalized and thereby an ethic based on empathy and mutual recognition. If real estate became a golden idol to be worshipped, it could cause harm to the ethic that lay at the core of Judaism itself.

Of course, Einstein’s vision is not that which shaped the region, but it was not a fight Einstein failed to take up passionately, arguing publicly and vociferously with those who would be the founding fathers of what has become Likud, Netanyahu’s political party. Their nationalistic ideology and their glorification of violent means led Einstein to denounce them. It was nationalism that fed anti-Semitism, Einstein contended, to adopt such a stance ourselves would cause us to ignore the lessons our history should have taught us.

"Military chaplaincy served to normalise & legitimise the actions of the regime, to create & utilise a form of 'manly' Christianity which could serve the war effort; chaplains were carefully selected, 'ideologically sound' men." Pete Hegseth seems to see this as an instruction manual.
Book cover: Between God and Hitler: Military Chaplains in Nazi Germany. By Doris L. Bergen.

2/ Taking any claims by these publications at face value is, frankly, bonkers (I use the term advisedly). Here’s what the party’s guide to inclusive language actually says. Most of the advice in it seems pretty sensible and to be drawn from organisations that represent…
Avoid gendered job titles and modifiers
Avoid descriptions such as: “lady doctor” or “female politician” (unless gender is directly relevant). These can imply that a particular gender is the default. Use gender-neutral terms wherever possible.

Avoid language which is harmful to people with mental health conditions
Avoid describing people as “mental,” “a nutter,” or “a lunatic.” While these terms are sometimes used in everyday language, they can reinforce negative stereotypes and stigma about mental health.

Use gender-neutral language
Where possible, use: “chair” instead of “chairman” “police officer” instead of “policeman” “firefighter” instead of “fireman”, “parents and carers” instead of mothers and fathers

1/ I’m not a fan of zealous language policing, but when the Telegraph, Spectator, Express etc. claim that the “Orwellian” Green Party is “banning” words like “father” & “mother”, I do object to this flagrant abuse of words like “ban” & “Orwellian”.

Outstandingly dishonest even by Nigel Farage's standards. Farage knows that the men arrested at Fairford would not have been released if they were still suspected to be terrorists. He's stirring up fear, hatred & resentment against both immigrants & the police. Pure malice.

2/ The men arrested at Fairford have been released on bail. Clearly, they are not terrorists. But this has not stopped the torrent of weaponized bullshit from Farage & MAGA know-nothings in the US.

a) We don't know that the #Fairford incident was an "attempted terrorist attack" b) The men arrested are all UK nationals c) Quoting Donald Trump as a reliable source on this or anything else is ridiculous d) The only point Farage proves (yet again) is that he's an opportunist grifter

2/ The Iran & Ukraine wars have pushed diesel & petrol prices to unprecedented heights, increasing the incentives for theft. There may be a connection between the Fairford incident & foreign wars that is nothing to do with state-backed terrorism.

The Fairford incident was called in by a farmer who found the FUEL2YOU vans parked outside her farm. There is currently an epidemic of fuel thefts from farms. Seems odd that "security experts" have not noted this possibility.

Jacob Rees-Mogg is now being called a "traitor" after arguing against a racial definition of Englishness. Like German conservatives in the 1930s, maybe he's finding out that alliances with fascists never end well.

George Galloway is currently living "in exile" in Moscow, broadcasting propaganda for Putin's gangster-capitalist regime and consorting with various far-right ideologues who also idolise Putin and are on the Kremlin payroll. Hope he loses his deposit in Holborn & St Pancras.

Zia Yusuf is lying as usual. Retrospective application of the law was written into the Representation of the People Bill & nobody is going to "seize" the £72 million in bungs that Reform has taken. They'll just have to return these to the dodgy donors in question.

Farage says he's "honoured" that crypto-billionaire Ben Delo is bunging £36 million to Reform. Makes perfect sense, given Farage's intensely relaxed attitude to money-laundering.

In 2022 Ben Delo pleaded guilty to violating anti-money laundering law in the US. Now he's giving £35m to Reform. And Andy Burnham could have put a stop to this via the Elections Bill. His failure to act on this corruption of our politics by dirty billionaire cash is simply inexcusable.

Farage to illicit US 'donor': "I used to work for Drexel Burnham Lambert. I get it." US investment bank DNB collapsed in 1990 following exposure of the criminal activities of Michael "Greed is Good" Milken & other senior execs. What Farage means is: "Relax. We're all greed-driven crooks here."

Robert Jenrick was more than happy to meet a donor for an "off the books project". In 2020 Honest Bob unlawfully fast-tracked a £1 billion property development for billionaire Tory donor Richard Desmond to help Desmond avoid tens of millions in tax. Champers all round!

Urge people to watch #Buried. The contamination with highly toxic "forever chemicals" is not "alleged" - it's proven. And government urgently needs to stop turning a blind eye. We need a #ZanesLaw to secure transparency & remediation.

Trump's renewed threat to grab Greenland is pure distraction from the vicious, pointless and massively damaging war with Iran, which he has no idea how to extricate himself from. But that doesn't mean he won't do it. Sometimes he does six impossibly stupid things before breakfast.

In The Vanity of Human Wishes, Dr Johnson wrote of the sad decline into senility of the great satirist Jonathan Swift: "From Marlb'rough's eyes the streams of dotage flow, And Swift expires a driv'ler and a show." John Cleese will be 87 in October.

Richard Tice may hope his expensive lawyers will scare the BBC off reporting on some very peculiar donations to Reform. Would love to see the BBC respond to Messrs Sue, Grabbit & Runne as Private Eye famously did to the spurious threat of a libel suit from a corporate crook.

Stuck for a birthday gift for that hard-to-please offshore billionaire in your life? Look no further...
Christopher Harborne holding a ventriloquist's dummy version of Nigel Farage.

Text: For the offshore billionaire who has everything: Nigel - your very own ventriloquist's dummy!

Promotes dodgy crypto! Denies climate science! Blames immigrants for everything!

... while the Mail & others heavily insinuate that "left-wing ideology" was behind the Widdecombe murder, the Express reports that the police are not ruling out "foreign interference". In the murky world of hybrid warfare, state actors have sometimes made use of ideologically motivated dupes.

...anyway, maybe a good time to remember Russia's failed staged "assassination attempt" on Viktor Orban, intended to help him get re-elected. Of course, Orban was worth much more to Putin alive than dead. This may not be the case with minor politicians of far-right parties Putin sees as useful.

Have senior Reform figures begun to claim they never met Posh George Cottrell & had only a vague idea of who he was (see Nathan Gill, pictured here, centre)? It won't work for Farage & Tice but fully expect Jenrick, Braverman etc to take this line soon.

4/ BTW, Fedichkin, the Russian "diplomat" to whom Andy Wigmore forwarded documents about Cottrell's arrest, was also the guy who invited Arron Banks to the first of many meetings with the Russian Ambassador. (Alexander Udod was a Russian spy they'd met with earlier).

3/ The BBC (and others) really should give more detail of the fraud for which Nigel Farage's close associate & benefactor George Cottrell was convicted & jailed in the US. This was to do with him offering to launder drug money. Here's part of the 2016 indictment. #bbclaurak

1/ I've known quite a bit about Posh George Cottrell for a long time. Until now, most of the UK media has studiously ignored Farage's extremely close associaton with this aristo-criminal, whose background (before crypto) is in hyper-dodgy offshore "money business" for Russian oligarchs.

2/ Asked by Sally Nugent how he's spent his £5m bung from Christopher Harborne, Nigel Farage bloviates furiously and equates this money with Nugent's BBC salary. Exactly as he did with Nick Robinson. A salary is payment for services rendered. Farage is bought & paid for by a crypto billionaire.
