other than that, just for practicing I'd recommend doing a lot of thumbnail sketches instead of detailed drawings to get a feel for how to place elements in a scene before you get distracted by drawing individual leaves or stuff like that

I started by joining a game jam and volunteering to do background art for my team because I thought it would be good for my portfolio. So I guess my first step was committing to something I entirely wasn't capable of at the time. And I guess it worked 🤠

and you should set up your canvas in physical measurements if you ever want to print. ideally also add a 3mm bleed area

if you set your canvas size in pixels, say 2000x2000 px, increasing the dpi will not increase the amount of information in the image. it will just make the print scale smaller. changing the dpi only matters if you define your canvas size in physical measurements
