HRVP @kajakallas.bsky.social: There are still some in the US and Europe who think that China can be decoupled from Russia. I don’t believe that this is possible. #LennartMeriConference

US administration would be wise to learn from the EU's past experience (I'm not expecting they will) of offering economic benefits to Russia in the hope of solving strategic disagreements. Russia won't give up its geopolitical goals in exchange for economic partnership with US (or Europe).

Euroopa Liit ei saa Hiinast lähtuvate julgeolekuohtude maandamises loota ainult viimase heale tahtele ja diplomaatiale. Tauno Tõhk selgitab, miks tuleks ELil tunnistada tegelikkust ja öelda selge sõnaga, et Hiina paneb Euroopa julgeoleku proovile. @toehk.bsky.social

5/5 The recommendation in this brief aligns with a similar proposal made last year in a report by Natalie Sabanadze, Abigaël Vasselier, and Gunnar Wiegand, focusing on the security implications of China's alignment with Russia. You'll find that report here: merics.org/en/report/ch...

4/5 Clearly labeling China a 'security challenge' and addressing these security risks would help EU Member States better manage their multifaceted relationship with China, safeguarding EU's long-term interests.

3/5 The 'systemic rival' label currently used by the EU doesn’t fully address the direct security risks posed by China. Recognizing these threats explicitly is necessary to align EU policy with the realities of China's actions.

2/5 China’s direct security challenges to Europe—including espionage, cyber operations, #FIMI, and economic coercion—extend well beyond its support for Russia.

In my latest #ICDS brief, I argue that security risks remain underrepresented in the EU's policy framework on #China. The existing categorization—cooperation partner, economic competitor, and systemic rival—is insufficient. 🧵👇
