Why are prediction markets fighting to avoid state gambling laws? In the final installment in @rooseveltinstitute.org's prediction market series, my colleague @bradlipton.bsky.social compares the federal rules for prediction markets to how states regulate gambling. Please take a look!

1/ My colleague @todusola.bsky.social and I did this piece on the real effects that prediction markets can have on people in our society who DO NOT use those markets, b/c the sheer range of bets available on those platforms gives people incentives to modify their behavior about all sorts of things.

Even if you’ve never logged into Kalshi or Polymarket, prediction markets may already impact you. Continuing @rooseveltinstitute.org's prediction market series, @bradlipton.bsky.social and I move beyond consumer harm to examine how prediction markets can corrupt society more broadly. Take a look!

Retail bettors have lost over half a billion dollars on Kalshi since it launched. For my first blog post at the @rooseveltinstitute.org, @bradlipton.bsky.social and I explore the mechanisms behind this wealth transfer and why studies like ours may become increasingly rare. Please take a look!

Mortgage refinancing saves families thousands a year, but often is out of reach for many working families. In this report, Brad Lipton and Peter Carroll propose policies at the state and federal levels that could bridge this gap and lead to large savings for many households. Please take a look!

We’ve spent decades told that if the economy grows, people’s lives will get better. Millions are working harder, paying more, and losing faith that institutions can deliver. Imagine an economy and democracy that actually make life better. That’s why today, we’re launching The #GoodLife Agenda. 🧵

As someone who got my PhD at a public university, takes a public bus to work every day, will send my son to public school, uses the postal service, and got an EV thanks to some government funded programs, I love public options and I bet you do too. We can build more things like these!

NEW in @nytimes.com: why are Americans leaving certain states? Our CEO @elizabethwwilkins.bsky.social says it’s about daily life feeling affordable. “Growth on paper means very little if your everyday experience is scarcity, [...] unaffordable care, and public systems that are hard to use.”
"Child care matters. Transportation matters. Public services matter. And whether you can make a decent living matters. These are the factors that determine whether people can manage daily life in places where jobs and opportunities are growing. And people want leaders who will cut through red tape and take on the folks, from employers to landlords to developers, who take advantage of them." – Elizabeth Wilkins, President and CEO, Roosevelt Institute.

This is how our government has been corrupted: 1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians 2) Elected officials rewrite rules in donors' favor 3) Donors make huge profit 4) Repeat We must get big money out of politics. It’s the root of all evil in Washington.

Bold ideas are crucial for improving the lives of working people, but so is delivering on those ideas. So proud to see my CEO, @elizabethwwilkins.bsky.social with @mayor.nyc.gov discussing how to do just that. #RooseveltSociety

Allison Zelman breaks down the dissonance between Trump's claims of a golden age in America in his #SOTU address and the harsher reality that many Americans face. Amidst rising housing, healthcare, and childcare costs, glossy rhetoric isn't enough; we need policies that can deliver a #GoodLife.

A lot of media buzz around prediction markets right now. I think folks are rightfully pointing out the very real human harm these markets pose. Without diminishing that reality—in fact, to better understand it—we should talk about what makes these markets so alluring to so many 🧵

“It’s impossible to solve America’s housing crisis without understanding the deep structural perversions in how homebuilding is financed.” - @balancecraft.bsky.social Housing affordability is an urgent issue, and we must expand our understanding of the crisis and our toolkit of solutions. 🧵👇

This story is honestly insane. Faraway investors buying up Detroit homes and turning them into crypto tokens; letting housing fall into disrepair, and evicting residents. This is what happens in an extraction economy.
