Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026I reject the notion that he will succeed in leaving the country this way. It’s certainly far more true than I would like it to be, but not all of these things are forgone conclusions. 011
Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Haha yesss, it’s now up to $1 billion for the security measures of the east wing project, not the ballroom per se. But it’s of a piece. I published this article on Saturday before this latest pricetag was reported. Keep it up, Republicans. The electoral cliff keeps getting steeper and steeper. 011
Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Sure, but it’s also about leaving his mark after he’s gone. He thinks of himself as an “important” president who should have things named after him like Kennedy, Washington and Jefferson. His obsession with these “monuments” is an implicit acknowledgment that he won’t be in power much longer. 011

Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Not sure you can really make a distinction between the two when it comes to Trump. For him, his legacy isn’t a piece of legislation or an enduring Republican majority, it’s buildings, arches, paved rose garden, his name on shit. That’s “legacy” to him—the things that will outlast him when he’s gone. 121
Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Because even though Trump won’t technically be on the ballot, in a way he will be. Voters will use their vote as a proxy to express disapproval of Trump by opposing Republicans up & down the ballot. Not least of all because he pushed for a ballroom as Americans struggle to afford basic necessities. 251
Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 05/05/2026Trump’s obsession with his ballroom despite the “let them eat cake” vibes of it all shows he’s more concerned with legacy than political outcomes. Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 22/04/2026It’s not even a terribly lefty message, which is why it works for a Democratic Socialist mayor, a conservative Prime Minster and a center left Senator. Todd Beeton @toddbeeton.bsky.social · 22/04/2026Yes, I understand your point.
