Will we have to go back to written exams in response to genAI, asks @thetimes.com. Our School did so before the panicked student anecdote at the beginning of this article.
Newspaper article: 'As more students turn to AI such as ChatGPT to improve their marks, professors are struggling to prove plagiarism. Will we have to go back to written papers, ask Louise Eccles and Lottie Hayton'.

It is the St Andrews film festival this weekend, and you might enjoy joining me and a film studio chief scientist talking about AI in the creative industries. I am already fully stocked with Arnie one liners, but please suggest other suitable films to drop into the chat sands-iff.com/portfolio-it...

I can't remember much but I do still have the t-shirt. Those days were very exciting as I had just moved from Singapore and it was a novelty both to be able to see cool bands and to not be told to sit down by police (standing up or dancing at concerts was considered very naughty).

Feeling a bit homesick this new year's eve, so tried asking Deepseek about Singapore. It told me that Singapore is in China. Which is something that I heard more than once when we lived in the US. So perhaps Deepseek is more American than you think.
A deepseek prompt asking "what is the capital of Singapore?" followed by some AI hallucination.

I confess that I don't know enough about the use cases and requirements for AP vs AT to know if this is a fair comparison. I found this at atproto.com/guides/faq but the merging data isn't taken into account by this 1m self-hosted edge case.
Another major reason is scalability. ActivityPub depends heavily on delivering messages between a wide network of small-to-medium sized nodes, which can cause individual nodes to be flooded with traffic and generally struggles to provide global views of activity. The AT Protocol uses aggregating applications to merge activity from the users' hosts, reducing the overall traffic and dramatically reducing the load on individual hosts.

When I was growing up there was no notion of data protection. NRIC numbers were used everywhere. I seem to remember they were even printed in the newspaper. But then the PDPA came in and you started to see signs like this. It would be a shame to regress.

Looks like I missed my chance for some easy money. And no cryptocurrency nonsense required! Just h-index nonsense instead. english.elpais.com/science-tech... (just in case it is not obvious, I am joking. My h-index would probably only get me a Saudi chocolate bar)
The great Saudi university farce is coming to an end. The number of highly cited scientists who claim to work in Saudi Arabia has plummeted by 76% since April last year, when EL PAÍS revealed the existence of a scheme in which foreign researchers were being paid up to €70,000 (nearly $74,000) a year to lie about their place of employment, in order to artificially pump up Saudi institutions in international academic rankings.

It is not obvious to me that a social media robots.txt is the way to go. Norms alone do not prevent data gathering. techcrunch.com/2024/12/05/b...
Graber did rule out one revenue stream: AI licensing deals. The CEO told TechCrunch offstage that Bluesky likely won’t profit from these deals like other social media platforms have, and the company already vowed to not train AI on Bluesky posts itself. However, Graber would like to establish something like the robots.txt protocol that exists for websites, as a way for Bluesky users to signal that they don’t want bots to scrape their content.

I tried theyseeyourphotos.com to see what Google Vision would detect. Hmm.
The image is a solid block of bright green color. There is nothing in the foreground or background; it's a completely uniform color across the entire image. The lack of any texture or object suggests a digital creation rather than a photograph of a real-world scene.

No people are present in this image. Therefore, there is no information about emotions, race, ethnicity, age, economic status, activities, or camera details to provide. The image's simplicity suggests it is likely a digital image, perhaps created as a background or placeholder.

The color's hexadecimal code is likely #558B2F, a shade of green often used in digital design. The absence of any detail implies a deliberate choice to convey emptiness or simplicity.

Coincidentally this was about the time that I lost faith in code and norms (I had given up on markets a while earlier). So I ended up going back to school to study the other of Lessig's regulatory modalities. I don't know what that says about me as a pathetic dot.
Lessig's four regulatory modalities: law, code, norms and markets.
