Block 37 owner is new, but is the curse still the same?
<p><i> In the Sun-Times last week: "Orland Park-based Edwards Realty Co.</i><a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/real-estate/2026/10/07/block-37-orland-park-edwards-realty-mall-rebrand-new-name" ><i> announced Wednesday </i></a><i>that it purchased Block 37 for $30 million, with plans to revamp the consumer experience at the Loop shopping mall."</i></p><p>True enough, though I would have gone with something along the lines of: </p><p></p><p></p><p>"You bought Block 37?!?!?! <i>Bwahaha!</i> Are you INSANE?"</p><p>A matter of tone, of course. The news routinely does — and very often should — reflect the dry facts set before the general public: leases and payments, business plans and company announcements.</p><p>But there is such a thing as karma. As juju. We could debate whether curses are real and whether certain physical places can be cursed for all time. The Bible endorses that notion, in Genesis: "Cursed is the ground for thy sake," God tells Adam, ejecting him from the Garden of Eden for, in his own way, failing to follow market imperatives. </p><p>How bad is it?</p><p>In the long history of urban development failure, there is really only one city block in the country that can be described as truly infamous: the block immediately east of Daley Plaza. Otherwise prime downtown property that has been known since before the city's founding as Block 37, it has also been called not only “cursed” but a "fiasco" and “a boondoggle.”</p><p>In 1996, a book was published chronicling earlier doomed efforts to make something take hold there. Ross Miller’s “Here’s the Deal,” cataloging years of lawsuits and protests over what he called a “gold-plated hole in the ground.”</p><p>Since then, a chain of false starts, bankruptcies, failures and foreclosures. Along with, to be fair, several modest successes: the studios of a once-respected television network, CBS on the southern half of the block. A popular restaurant, The Dearborn, on its northwest corner. Some offices and apartments.</p><p>And yet. One hopes Edwards Realty of Orland Park did their due diligence. But if not, buckle up guys, and sorry (<i>psst: note to regular readers. Not really sorry. In fact, I kinda dig it</i>) to be the one to have to tell you.</p><h3>In 1830, Block 37’s tale begins</h3><p>Like a good campfire story, the tale of Block 37 starts a long, long time ago, in 1830, and might indeed involve a Native American curse. Not because of the usual disturbed sacred burial ground,. But close. On the original map of Chicago, the ancestral land of the Council of the Three Fires, the Potawatomi, the Ojibwe and the Odawa, was platted up into 58 blocks so it could be sold off by New York real estate speculators to pay for the I & M Canal, thus permanently ripping off and disenfranchising the defrauded Indigenous peoples, who no doubt resented it. On that fateful document, the block delineated by Randolph, Washington, Dearborn and the edge of the map where State would someday run is designated with a number, and that number is 37.</p><div class="Enhancement" data-align-center> <div class="Enhancement-item" data-crop=""> <figure class="Figure"><a class="AnchorLink" id="image-900000" name="image-900000"></a> <picture data-crop="medium"> <source type="image/webp" width="490" height="275" data-srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/41d1720/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/490x275!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f5aa9d2/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/980x550!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png 2x" data-lazy-load="true" srcset="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" /> <source width="490" height="275" data-srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/36bfd11/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png" data-lazy-load="true" srcset="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" /> <img class="Image" alt="1830 map" srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/36bfd11/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/e36178f/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/980x550!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png 2x" width="490" height="275" data-src="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/36bfd11/2147483647/strip/true/crop/2728x1531+0+206/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F2f%2Fe2%2F152eba0e426ba4f7e8cf478dda2b%2Fthompson-plat-of-chicago-1830.png" data-lazy-load="true" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" > </picture> <div class="Figure-content"><figcaption class="Figure-caption"><p>Where the trouble started. Block 37 is in the lower right, second from the bottom.</p></figcaption><span class="line"></span><div class="Figure-credit"><p>Wikimedia</p></div></div> </figure> </div> </div><p>It might be argued that Block 37 had a good 19th century. Office buildings. Theaters. A YMCA. Even the first half of the 20th century passed unstricken. There was a Stop & Shop. Maybe the curse was placed in 1989, when newly elected Mayor Richard M. Daley, hot to top his father as Rich the Builder, allowed the block to be razed, including the landmark McCarthy Building, a dear little five-story structure built the year after the Great Chicago Fire. Maybe that was the original sin, hubris: rejection of the past, clearing the entire block before its replacement was firmly set.</p><p>The site sat mostly empty for 20 years, poorly masked by various dismal half-efforts to hide its yawning vacancy in the heart of the Loop: a little-patronized ice skating rink; an underfunded arts and crafts festival, held in tents.</p><p>Starting in 2005, the CTA poured nearly half a billion dollars into the basement of Block 37, hoping to construct some sort of subterranean mega station tying the Blue and Red lines together. Instead, they only managed to create a really expensive cavern.</p><p>Finally, in 2009, a four-story mall opened that its owners called, with either laudable Chicago cheek or foolish strike-me-dead hubris, "Block Thirty Seven." That is what Edwards Realty of Orland Park boldly, or rashly, bought for $30 million.</p><p>For years, the place had a 70% vacancy rate. Though I worked nearby and passed frequently, I never considered going inside until one day in 2013 — this is how I described the experience:</p><p>"It says something about the outer Neptune orbital ring of Chicago consciousness" of the location that "the idea of actually stepping into an establishment on Block 37 never crossed my mind until Monday, after I noticed the Doughnut Vault’s distinctive cornflower-blue 1957 van parked on the sidewalk directly under the Dearborn entrance to what is boldly (or foolishly) called 'Block Thirty Seven Shops on State.' If Block 37 exerts a repulsive force on profits and customers, the Doughnut Vault is the opposite, exerting a magnetic, indeed, mesmeric, power. I bought a doughnut even though I wasn’t hungry and didn’t want one.</p><p>"I was chatting with Derek, the guy in the van, when a frantic publicist, seeing my notebook, waylaid me, insisting on personally escorting me that instant into Block 37. It all happened so quickly, it was a little discombobulating, as if a hatch opened in the Bean and a gnome yanked me inside. I would have preferred a bit of ceremony, the way buses entering Jerusalem will pause to let the occupants weep and sing and pray. The mall has been open four years, but the second floor has the raw feel of a space opening next month. There is one store."</p><p>I did my best to promote the desperate pop-up stores found inside, noting, "If you do go, after eating your fill, make sure you wander up to the third floor to gaze respectfully on the expanse of closed stores, noting the brave, sad mural showing the busy, successful food court that isn't there." </p><div class="Enhancement" data-align-center> <div class="Enhancement-item" data-crop=""> <figure class="Figure"><a class="AnchorLink" id="image-050000" name="image-050000"></a> <picture data-crop="medium"> <source type="image/webp" width="490" height="275" data-srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/05b2b4f/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/490x275!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/c444e15/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/980x550!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg 2x" data-lazy-load="true" srcset="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" /> <source width="490" height="275" data-srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/bdf76ef/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg" data-lazy-load="true" srcset="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" /> <img class="Image" alt="IMG_0943.jpg" srcset="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/bdf76ef/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/1668852/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/980x550!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg 2x" width="490" height="275" data-src="https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/bdf76ef/2147483647/strip/true/crop/640x359+0+60/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fc4%2F7b%2Ff3836be0484d9207326f8f4a525a%2Fimg-0943.jpg" data-lazy-load="true" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=" > </picture> <div class="Figure-content"><figcaption class="Figure-caption"><p>Elon Musk, left, and Rahm Emanuel in the void under Block 37 in 2018. In 2013, I didn't think so, writing:</p><p>"There is no reason to assume the block's woes are over. The Original Sin of politics was the invention of the passive voice, when Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Vague Unaccountability. Wild how all those violent ICE agents just … got hired … and deployed … somehow. Who can possibly say how? It’s all a mystery.

Hard not to notice that Democrats who are doing the best are the ones who are leaving this whole civility-and-norms, we-go-high, we-need-a-strong-Republican-Party bullshit behind and are simply giving Republicans exactly what they all ought to get at all times, which is undisguised contempt.

What fresh hell of a framing is this?? "alleges the groups are advocating for the long-debated practice of jury nullification" Long-debated?! It's literally part of the our founding origin story: the Zenger trial in 1735! It's not "debated"! It's a fundamental core REASON FOR THE JURY AT ALL.

This is the sort of seemingly attempted murder that seems to me could arguably get around sovereign immunity claims. In a county that recently elected someone on the reform-DA side of the line. I don't think Sean Tende is a Krasner or a Moriarty, but he's still on the "progressive" side of things.

You know what? Good. We have spent years making the state killing of people both seemingly antiseptic and invisible. This makes the brutality of the state killing in our name naked and undeniable. They think they are being macho edgelords. I think it will horrify more than anything.

Everybody has to coordinate with Starlink because SPACEX CONTROLS ORBIT. That's against the Outer Space Treaty. Your engineering challenge, SpaceX, is to provide your services with fewer satellites. Not yell at everyone else for having satellites too […]

Hold up, I'm confused, probably because I'm nauseous. The passports aren't for visitors, they're for citizens. I don't need to be welcomed, because this is actually my home. On a visa, this would make sense, tho still be tyrannical. On a passport, it's incoherent.

Too young to legally consent to sign a contract. But old enough to consent away where they want to live to be shipped someplace random by a government that hates them. In a just world, Hollad would need to annex half of Belgium to find room for the expanded Hague prison thus all calls for.

oh yes
bluesky thread by Dan O'Sullivan:
"Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.
I should add that in addition to being much funnier than anticipated--Musk is going to be intensely humiliated by this movie, it's going to attack the deepest wounds he tries so hard to conceal--it is also bone-chilling. I think he gutted USAID with DOGE to kill masses of people in the third world.
I should also add that when the movie got to showing people burning Teslas and vandalizing dealerships, the theater of mostly older folks in Santa Monica started applauding. I think it is possible Trump and Musk turned libs over 50 into John Brown.
There's a moment early on that's just footage of Elon Musk balding and in khakis walking down an office hallway in the late 90s and the entire audience burst out laughing. If Musk is made aware of audience reactions like this I think he might actually crash out.

SCOTUS delenda est. It is democracy, or SCOTUS. They have made it very clear that there is no other choice. Expand it, reverse its worst opinions, and then ruthlessly strip it of jurisdiction. Don't trust an expanded SCOTUS in the long run.

Having top secret components shipped directly to a hostile nation is obviously keystone-kops shit, but everything in these last four paragraphs seem even more damning to me www.politico.com/news/2026/09...
From Politico: A Government Accountability Office report from 2023 found that more than 1 million F-35 spare parts have gone missing in the past five years. The watchdog agency concluded the department hasn’t been able to review spare part losses worth tens of millions of dollars because Lockheed controls the information.

“The F-35 Joint Program Office does not track or enter these spare parts into an accountable property system of record that would enable it to capture and store real-time changes to property records,” the report said. “The prime contractors maintain this information.”

Spare parts shortages mean the fighter jet is often grounded. While sustainment costs have continued to increase, the F-35 has not met performance goals and performance “has trended down,” according to a GAO report from this year.

The program is on track to be the world’s costliest, and the Pentagon expects to spend almost $2 trillion over the course of its lifespan.

Great start, but QI should be abolished for everyone. If only bc it’s bad policy. But also? It’d be a well-earned middle finger to a SCOTUS—not just this one, but decades of them—that have willfully impeded holding crim legal actors to account.

Bonus happy goats: a neighbour dropped off a bucket of apple peels. The goats like the apple peels so much they mostly ignored the geese, who also really liked the apple peels (but you'll notice the goats gave the geese a wide berth: geese are jerks)
A farmyard with a whole bunch of goats of many sizes and colours eating from a pile of apple peels on the ground. They are all making space for 3 white geese to grab some of the apple peels too. The sun is shining and the grass is green, and there are some chickens and farm buildings visible in the background.

I still lurk on the r/London subreddit and came across this hilarious piece of activist art which turns a bin into a "smart glasses amnesty bin" that apparently is just across the Ray Ban store. 💅 www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1w… #pervertglasses
A bin with some ad busting layover stuck to it. Under the ray ban and Meta logo it reads "smart glasses amnesty bin" next to a pictogram of a person throwing the glasses into a bin.

Further text reads: Wearing hidden camera glasses massively increases the likelihood of people thinking you're a nonce
